IRELAND READY FOR INDIA TEST AT WORLD YOUTHS

Ireland’s squad for the AIBA World Women’s Youth Championships in Guwahati, India are getting stronger and stronger, according to team manager Anna Moore.

Team Ireland leave for India on Wednesday morning after completing their training camp in Ireland.

The panel trained at the Two Castles BC in Tyrone last week and returned to the National Stadium to complete their preparations last weekend.

Dominic O’Rourke, President of the IABA, and Gerry Storey, Chairperson of the IABA Ladies Committee, spoke to the panel and wished all the best of luck in India.

“They’re (squad) getting stronger and stronger,” said Anna Moore. “All they want to do now is get there and get into the ring. That’s what they trained for and they’re ready.”

Guwahati marks the first stand alone World Women’s Youth Championships; all previous tournaments were held in conjunction with the World Women’s Junior Championships.

Katie Rowland and Michaela Walsh won double bronze at the inaugural World Youths in Turkey in 2011 and Christina Desmond claimed silver in Bulgaria in 2013 while Natasha Logan secured bronze in Chinese Taipei in 2015.

(European Elite bronze medallist Desmond and World Junior champion Ciara Ginty qualified for the 2014 Olympics Youths in 2014 at a version of the World Women’s Youth featuring the three Olympic weights for women in Bulgaria).

The 2017 AIBA World Women’s Youths will act as a qualifier for the 2018 Olympic Youths in Buenos Aires, Argentina in the fly, feather, light and middle classes.

Thirty eight nations have registered to compete in Guwahati which also marks the first time a World Championships has been held in India since New Delhi 2006 where Katie Taylor won her first World Elite gold.

Team Ireland leave for India on Wednesday morning.
