Strandja Day Four: Harrington & O’Rourke Secure At Least Bronze Medals.

Lightweight Olympic champion, Kellie Harrington, and fellow Olympian, Aoife O’Rourke, have won through to the semi-finals of the 73rd Strandja International Tournament today, and secured at least bronze medals in the process.

They were among 5 Team Ireland boxers in action today.

Harrington won a unanimous decision in decisive fashion over Kazabhstan’s Aidana Zabynbekova, – O’Rourke was similarly emphatic in her victory over Davina Michel of France

Both women will box their semi-finals on Friday.

Olympian, Michaela Walsh boxed Russia’s Liudmila Voronstova, and her participation in the tournament ended following a 5-0 decision in favour of her opponent.

M71kg Luke Maguire met Abdyzhapar Uulu Syrgak of Kyrgyzstan in a strongly contested bout – the 3-1 split decision the result of a point deduction for the Dubliner.

W50kg Caitlin Fryers was scheduled to meet Finland’s Pihla Kaivo-Oja, but was withdrawn by the Team Ireland coaches and medical team.

W52kg Carly McNaul will be the only Team Ireland boxer in the ring at Strandja on Thursday. She is in Quarter Final action in bout 224 of the tournament, against Tetiana Kob of Ukraine. Carly boxes in Bout 8 in Ring A.

The tournament organisers have yet to release the Day Five programme, or Day Four session results. Both are expected later tonight, or in the early hours of Thursday morning.

The tournament is being live-streamed by the IBA, on its YouTube channel. Links, per ring and session, will be issued on Thursday morning.

Strandja Day Three Results: Wins For Harrington & O’Rourke

Team Ireland banked two more wins on Day Three of the 73rd Strandja International Tournament.

Tokyo Olympic lightweight champion, Kellie Harrington, made her return to the ring in decisive fashion, with a unanimous win over Sweden’s Agnes Alexiusson

Fellow Olympian, W75kg Aoife O’Rourke, recorded a second round RSC win over Greece’s Vasiliki Stravridou.

They were among 6 Team Ireland boxers contesting on Day Three.

80kg Kelyn Cassidy was the second in action today, against Nikita Nystedt of Finland , resulting in a 4-1 split decision in favour of the Fin.

W70kg Christina Desmond faced Galina Golovchenko of Russia – the decision was unanimous in favour of the Russian boxer.

57kg Adam Hession boxed Abdulmalik Khalokov of Uzbekistan. The Uzbek came away with the unanimous decision.

A similar fate for JP Hale against Artur Subkhankulov of Russia.

M71kg Luke Maguire makes his tournament debut on Wednesday, in the evening session, against Abdyzhapar Uulu Syrgak of Kyrgyzstan

Competition News: IABTA 2022 Championships Programmes Released.

Over 130 boxers will contest the 2022 IATBA Championships, which will take place at the National Stadium, Dublin.

Day One – Quarter Finals and Semi Finals: Saturday, February 26th.

Day Two – Semi Finals, Sunday, February 27th.

Day Three – Finals: Saturday, March 5th.

Boxing begins at 11am on each day.

Weigh-ins: Daily, on the day of boxing, between 8am and 9am. There is no preliminary weigh-in.

Programme: Quarter Finals and Semi Finals: Saturday, February 26th.

Programme: Semi Finals: Sunday, February 27th.

Programme: Finals: Saturday, March 5th.

As advised in January, all sporting organisations across Ireland are required to complete a Sport Ireland Club Safeguarding Self-Assessment Audit 2021-2022.

Sport Ireland launched its auditing tool in March 2021. It is aimed at ensuring club compliance with the Children First Act. The audit is designed to support National Governing Bodies, including the IABA, in strengthening adherence to safeguarding policies and procedures thereby ensuring that children and young people partaking in sport are protected.

The Sport Ireland Club Safeguarding Self-Assessment Audit 2021-2022 is designed to enable clubs to:

  • Self-assess adherence to Safeguarding Policies and procedures
  • Identify gaps and actions areas

The Sport Ireland Club Safeguarding Self-Assessment Audit 2021-2022 is designed to enable The IABA to:

  • Gain an overview of Safeguarding adherence
  • Identify any issues of non-compliance
  • Identify supports clubs may need to become compliant

The IABA will support clubs through this audit in these ways:

  • Providing access links to the online audit process.
  • Providing a step-by-step guide to completing the audit process.
  • Providing access to video resources to guide clubs through the audit completion process
  • Providing advice, support, and guidance through the IABA’s National Child Safeguarding Manager Declan Lynch, available at declan@iaba.ie.

The IABA re-sending the link to all clubs who have been identified as providing a relevant service under the Children First Act 2015. This link provides the club with access to create an account and to login to access the online self-assessment questionnaire.

The online self-assessment questionnaire covers the following areas:

  • Key Safeguarding Roles
  • Safeguarding Training
  • Child Safeguarding policies and procedures
  • Additional policies, procedures, and guidance
  • Volunteer Recruitment & Support
  • Behaviour & Equality
  • Communication

All affiliated organisations will need to complete the online self-assessment questionnaire and submit it before March 20th, 2022.

January 26th, 2022: The IABA advisory on Sport Ireland Club Safeguarding Self-Assessment Audit 2021-2022 issued to all affiliated clubs.

January 29th, 2022: The IABA provides audit access links and supporting resources to all clubs.

February 22nd, 2022: Deadline reminder issued to all clubs

March 20th, 2022: Deadline for completion of the Sport Ireland Club Safeguarding Self-Assessment Audit 2021-2022

For clubs which would like to review their safeguarding practices and procedures in advance of completing the Sport Ireland Club Safeguarding Self-Assessment Audit 2021-2022, the IABA’s suite of safeguarding templates and documents, are here. This resource contains 27 templates, policy and guidance resources for clubs.

Strandja Day Two Results: Wins For Fryers, McNaul & Walsh.

Team Ireland came away with three wins on the second day of the 73rd Strandja International Tournament.

W50kg Caitlin Fryers opened Ireland’s account with a 5-0 decision win over  Eugenia Anghel (ROU) 

That was followed 10 minutes later in Ring B, when W52kg Carly Naul was the right side of a 4-1 decision in her contest with Zhaina Shekerbekova of Kazakhstan.

Olympian, Michaela Walsh, returned to competitive action for the first time since the Tokyo games in Sofia today, and came away with a unanimous win over  Lacramioara Perijoc of Romania.

The first Team Ireland boxer in action at Strandja today, W48kg Shannon Sweeney, lost out to Italian, Roberta Bonatti, on a unanimous decision.

Six Irish boxers are in action on Day Three of the tournament:

Reigning W60kg Olympic Champion, Kellie Harrington, makes her post-Tokyo return to the ring. Also boxing are W70kg Christina Desmond and Olympian W75kg Aoife O’Rourke.

M57kg Adam Hession, M60kg JP Hale, and M80kg Kelyn Cassidy all have byes and make their tournament debuts tomorrow. The programme is here:
