HARRINGTON GUARANTEED BRONZE AT WORLD ELITES (UPDATED)

Kellie Harrington

Amy Broadhurst bowed out of the World Elite Championships on a split decision to India’s  Simranjit Baath Kaur in the light-welter class this afternoon.

The  finals scores read 28-28 and 29-27,30-26,29-27 to Kaur and 29-27 to Broadhurst.

The Dundalk soutphaw, who won the first round on the unofficial cards by virtue of a stunning left alone, continued to impress in the second with simple but effective one-two combinations, Kaur also had her moments in the middle of the frame and toward the end of the stanza.

Broadhurst dropped the Indian orthodox with what looked like a legitimate left in the third but the ref ruled that a slip. The third person in the ring then gave Broadhurst a public warning for hitting with the inside of the glove moments later.

The European U/22 champion left the ring in tears after the verdict was announced. Magnificent performance from Broadhurst who was making her World Elite debut in New Delhi..

Earlier today, Kellie Harrington guaranteed Ireland at least one bronze.

The Dublin lightweight beat Canada’s Caroline Veyre on a unanimous decision in this morning’s 60kg quarter-final  to take her place in Thursday’s semi-finals.

Harrington, a silver medallist at light-welter at the 2016 World Elites in Kazakhstan, has now won her second successive medal at this level.

The current Irish Elite champion, who got her shots off early and often in all three rounds against Veyre, an opponent she beat in the 2017 Celtic Box Cup final in Dungarvan in 2017, will meet Kazakhstan’s Karina Ibragimova on Thursday for a place in Saturday’s lightweight final.

“We are very happy with Kellie. She was very calm and patient and it was a fantastic performance today,” said Irish head coach Zaur Antia.

Scores 29-28,29-28,29-28, 30-27,30-27 to Harrington.
