The St Monica’s BC in Newry don’t hang about, do they?

It’s just a few months since they were founded this year and already they have a boxer through to an Elite final.

Conor Wallace goes head-to-head with AIBA World No. 3 ranked Michael O’Reilly on Friday for the Elite middleweight title of Ireland at the National Stadium.

Wallace has already claimed an Intermediate belt this year after beating Eddie Byrne in the 75kg final in October. He also beat Byrne of the Na Fianna BC in the Elite semi-finals last weekend.

The Intermediate champion faces a formidable opponent in O’Reilly. The Portlaoise BC man is aiming for his third successive belt in the 75kg class.

O’Reilly claimed European Games gold in Baku, Azerbaijan last June and also took home bronze from the AIBA World Elite Championships in Doha, Qatar.

Wallace, who is competing at his first Elite Championships, acknowledged that he is the underdog going into Friday’s showdown, but the St Monica’s BC stand out believes the pressure will be on his opponent and reckons he can cause an upset.

He said: “I am really looking forward to Friday’s final, it’s a massive occasion. I know that I’m going into the final as a big underdog, but I’m coming off the back of a few great wins, beating Conor Coyle (Commonwealth Games bronze medallist) and Eddie Byrne on route to the final.

“There is no pressure on me. The pressure is on him. Michael isn’t world number three for nothing. He is a top class opponent and I have a lot of respect for him.

“But I’m confident and I’m boxing well, I feel fit and strong and I know if I box to the best of my ability I can cause an upset.”

Brian Wallace, father of Conor, said it was a massive boost for the club to have an athlete through to an Elite decider.

“It’s absolutely great even for the younger members who have just started. It encourages them and shows them what they can achieve,” said Wallace senior, who was Irish team manager at the recent European Youth Championships in Poland.

O’Reilly, meantime, has his eye on an Elite hat-trick at the home of Irish boxing.

“I’d be confident going into the final. It’s what I’ve been preparing for. I have to do what I do best. I’m focussing on that,” said the European No. 1.
