Two more Team Ireland boxers have claimed podium places at the World Junior Championships in Yerevan, Armenia.
345 boxers from 51 countries are contesting the tournament, the first of its kind in 8 years. 11 of those boxers are Team Ireland athletes.
70Kg Mary McDonagh, Sliabh Luachra BC make a definitive tournament debut, contesting her quarter final against Akbota Essimekova of Kazakhstan. Mary was a decisive 5-0 winner – the judges scored the bout 30:27; 30:27; 30:27; 30:26; 30:26.
63Kg John Donoghue, Olympic Mullingar BC met Zakhar Bespalov of Russia in his quarter final, and earned his place on the podium with a spectacular Round 1 RSC.
Not to be on this occasion for 52Kg Christian Doyle, Team Doyle BC, who boxed two excellent contests to reach the quarter finals stage. He contested today against Poland’s Oskar Grodszici and the 4-1 split decision went to the his opponent -30:26; 30:27; 28:29; 30:27; 30:27.
52Kg Grace Conway, Treadagh BC also made her debut in Yerevan today, against Nisha Nisha of India, with a brave performance. The Indian boxer got the 5-0 decision and the judges scored the bout 28:29; 28:29; 28:29; 28:29; 28:29.
57Kg Patrick Kelly, Kilmyshall BC met Afghanistan’s Amanollah Sahak in his quarter final, also following two great wins en route. That finished with a UD for the Afghani boxer: 28:29; 27:30; 28:29; 28:29; 27:30.
70Kg Alex Noonan Carmody put in a battling performance in his quarter finals against Norbet Abdullaev of Uzbekistan, but it wasn’t to be following a 4-0 decision for Abdullaev 26:29; 25:29; 28:28; 24:29; 25:29.
Semi Finals
John Donoghue boxes his fourth bout of the tournament against Greece’s Emmanouil Fotiadis in Bout 12 of Ring A’s Afternoon Session. In Bout 6 in Ring B’s Afternoon Session, Mary McDonagh contests against India’s Akansh Phalaswal.
63Kg Siofra Lawless, of Four Kings BC, makes her tournament debut having already won a bronze medal. She contests against Georgia’s Ana Khvedelidze in Bout 4 of Ring B’s evening session.
