IRELAND V ENGLAND 1ST LEG

Tipperary’s Jerome Lonergan-Garthland and Ellie Mae-Garthland will write their own piece of Irish boxing history on Friday evening when they line out for Ireland versus England in a Senior Cadet international at the St Brigid’s BC in Offaly.

The Clonmel BC brother and sister team are slated to meet England’s Billy Adam and  Sameenah Toussaint in Edenderry and become the first male and female twins to represent their country internationally

Ellie, explained Clonmel BC coach Martin Fennessy, is a three-time Irish champion who has represented Ireland twice against Italy and France, and Jerome, also an Irish titlist, boxed for Ireland at the 2016 European Schoolboy Championships in Croatia where he beat Bulgaria’s Krasimir Dzhurov but lost to Russia’s eventual finalist Kiril Kladovikov in the quarter-finals.

The twins, who are between the ropes in back-to-back bouts on Friday, also claimed double gold at the Wexford Box Cup in 2017.

“They’re both very dedicated and motivated boxers and we wish them and the Irish team the very best of luck on Friday night,” said Fennessy.

The Edenderry international will be decided over 20 bouts (subject to change). Boxing begins at 6pm.

Admission: €10 for Adults and €5 for U/15s.

Both nations meet again on Saturday night at the St Michael’s Athy BC in Kildare.

Irish amateur boxing is proudly sponsored by Liffey Crane.
