3 wins for Ireland at the European Youth Championships.

Ireland recorded three wins from four bouts at the European Youth Championships in Porec, Croatia, today.

48kg Scott Thompson was first up, in Bout 2 – he boxed Georgia’s Mikheil Gvasalia, and gave two standing counts in the first two rounds. He came away with the 5-0 win. Judges scored the bout 30:25; 30:25; 30:26; 30:26; 30:25. In the following bout, 54kg Kai Ducque met France’s Mohamed Djemmal and battled well, but came out on the wrong side of a 4-1 split decision. The bout was scored 28:29; 28:29; 29:28; 28:29; 28:29.

In bout 7, 63.5kg Ryan Jenkins took on Turkey’s Refik Kartal – the bout was a 4/3 decision in Ryan’s favour. That decision was only announced following a bout review of the officials’ scores. The final scores were: 29:28; 29:28; 29:28; 28:29; 28:29. Team Co-Captain, 92+kg Adam Olaniyan made his tournament debut in bout 10, against Poland’s Kryzsztof Zakrzews, and progresses following a 5-0 decision. The judges scored the bout 27:30; 27:30; 27:30; 27:30; 27:30.

33 countries and 330 boxers are contesting the competition, in Porec, Croatia. Participation federations are Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, IBA – B, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, England, Estonia, France, Georgia, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Kosovo, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey and Ukraine. 

Ireland has a highly successful recent history at the tournament – the 2022 team won more medals at this competition that any other Team Ireland Youth squad contesting a European level tournament. They came home with 3 gold for Team Co-Captain, 71kg Bobbi Flood, 81kg Dearbhla Tinnelly and 81+kg Cliona D’arcy, a silver for 70kg Laura Moran and 3 bronze for 48kg boxers Georgia Dunn McGovern and Patsy Joyce, 50kg Katie O’Keeffe, and 63kg Winnie McDonagh.

Day Three

Three Ireland boxers are between the ropes on Saturday, all in Ring B’s afternoon session. 48kg Tiffany Spencer meets Lala Madatova of Azerbaijan in Bout 2. 3 bouts later, in Bout 5, 50kg Carlagh Peake, contests against England’s Alice Catherine Pumphrey, while 52kg Grace Conway Dowling, is in against Romania’s Luciana Maria Petrache.
