Tough day for Team Ireland at European U22 Championships

Team Ireland boxers had a tough day of it at the European U22 Championships in Budva, Montenegro.

48kg Padraig Downey, St. John Bosco BC, Antrim made his tournament debut at the Quarter Final stage against Azerbaijan’s Tural Sariyev in Bout Two of Ring A’s Afternoon Session. It was a tough bout, won by the Azerbaijani boxer 5-0. Judges scored the bout 30:26; 30:27; 30:26; 30:27; 29:28.

57kg Donagh Keary, Rathfriland BC returned for his second bout of the tournament, also against Azerbaijan and also at the Quarter Final stage. He met Azrak Babirov in Bout 2 in Ring B’s Evening Session. It was also a UD for the Azerbaijani boxer. The bout was scored: 27:28; 26:29; 26:29; 26:29; 25:29.

Thirty-four teams with 299 boxers (202 men and 97 women) are in Budva. The participating teams are Albania, Armenia, Austria, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Denmark, Estonia, France, Georgia, IBA-Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Kosovo, Malta, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Turkey and IBA-Neutral.

Day Six

81kg Dearbhla Tinnelly, Clann Naofa BC 54kg Robin Kelly, Ballynacargy BC and 70kg Evelyn Igharo, Clann Naofa BC are all assured of bronze medals.

Dearbhla opens her tournament against Poland’s Martyna Jancelewicz in Bout 11 of Ring A’s afternoon session. Over in Ring B in the same session, Robin Kelly takes on Serbia’s Sara Cirkovic in Bout 4.
