IABA is delighted to affirm a renewal of our partnership with Sport TG4.

The station, and Nemeton Productions, live-streamed the 2023 National Elite Championship Finals on January 21st – the finals were watched by over 44,000 people.

The 2024 finals will take place on Saturday, November 11th, at the home of Irish boxing, beginning at 5pm. Seán Bán Breathnach, Cuán Ó Flatharta, Antoine Toto Ó Gríofa & Kaci Rock will share commentary & co-commentary.

The 2024 National Elite Championship finals are another key step on the Road to Paris for IABA athletes. Five boxers – lightweight Olympic Champion, Kellie Harrington, Tokyo Olympians 75kg Aoife O’Rourke and 57kg Michaela Walsh, as well as 63.5kg Dean Clancy and 92kg Jack Marley, have already qualified for the 2024 Olympics.

Restructuring of the IABA emerges as top priority in online member Strategic Consultation.

Respondents to IABA’s online member Strategic Consultation have identified structural reform of the federation as their key priority.

The consultation was launched in advance as IABA prepares for the development of a Strategic Plan, 2024-2028. This process kicks off with the first member Strategic Forum at the National Stadium Dublin, at 1.30pm on November 11th. The Strategic Forum is open to all adult members, and registration is not required.

When asked what areas of governance reform they would most like to see across the association, 53% of respondents highlighted structural reform:

Key points:

44% of respondents were from Leinster

41% of respondents have been in boxing for more than 30 years

32% of respondents were aged 55-64 years old.

Among their positive contributions to the growth and development of boxing, respondents noted:

*Cavan diversion programme Cavan school completion programme school and colleges. Currently working with Cavan development board with refugees and other misplaced adults as well as classes due to begin in Cavan Ukrainian centre for those interested. Awards from Cavan C.C. and Cavan T.C. 

*Teaching the right aspects of boxing 

*Developed a policy of inclusiveness to give all boxing levels the opportunity to engage in the sport 

*Started a new club in a town that had no previous history in boxing

Members are asked to share their views on the Board of Directors, Central Council, Provincial Councils/Units, High-Performance, and Staff, as well as on the governance of the federation.

The consultation was anonymous.

Team Ireland depart for European U22 Championships

A 15 strong Team Ireland squad has departed to contest the European U22 Championships, taking place in Budva, Montenegro, from November 9th to 20th.

320 boxers from 38 countries have registered to contest the tournament: Albania, Armenia, Austria, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Denmark, England, Estonia, France, Georgia, IBA – Germany, Greece, Hungary, IBA – Neutral, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Kosovo, Malta, Moldova, Montenegro, IBA – Netherlands, Northern Macedonia, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Turkey and Wales.

The host city, Budva, has a special resonance for Team Ireland – it was the location of the 2022 Women’s European Championship, where the team came home with 3 gold, a silver and 2 bronze medals, topping the table in the process.

Team Ireland had a very successful campaign at the 2022 European U22 Championships in Porec, Croatia, in March of that year, returning with 3 gold medals, 1 silver and 3 bronze medals. The golds were claimed by heavyweight and now Paris 2024 Olympian, Jack Marley, Lisa O’Rourke who would claim a World gold just 2 months later, and 54kg Niamh Fay

The women’s team finished joint 2nd in the tournament’s medals rankings and 3rd out of 24 countries in the team rankings. Turkey and Italy were in first and second, respectively.

The men’s team finished 7th out of 33 nations – Turkey and Ukraine, with 13 boxers apiece, finished in first and second, respectively.

To prepare for the first forum, and to enable members who cannot attend on that day to share their views, IABA has opened an online member strategic consultation.
