Safety in Boxing: registration open for 5 additional courses

Following on from the IABA’s inaugural First Aid education programme, Safety in Boxing, in May, IABA is opening 5 course for registration. They will focus on how to recognise and care for people with life-threatening injuries before the arrival of healthcare practitioners.

These are 1-day courses, led by Dr. Robert Scully in partnership with Jim Howe of getready.ie. They will touch on Health and Safety, Basic First Aid and Athlete Injury covering topics including:

  • First Aid in the Workplace
  • Patient Assessment
  • Incident Procedure
  • Basic CPR Understanding
  • Common Medical Emergencies (asthma, diabetes, etc)
  • Injury Management & Shock
  • Care of the Unconscious Patient

This practical learning is being funded for members by IABA, through Sport Ireland. IABA hopes to provide this training to a total of 180 people in the first phase.

IABA online Safeguarding 1 course.

IABA Safeguarding Team is launching online Safeguarding 1 learning.

This course is essential for anyone engaging with children in the area of sport. It provides introductory information on codes of conduct, bullying, recruitment, etc. as well as child protection guidelines. 

By following the principles, policy and practical guidelines contained in the Code, sports leaders are playing their part in providing a safe and enjoyable environment in which children can learn and thrive.

The first course will take place on Friday, June 23rd, from 10am to 1pm. Places are limited, and intending participants are asked to register their interest here.

If places are filled, your name will be added to waiting list for future courses run by the IABA safeguarding team. The cost per participant is €15.00

Club coaches honoured at European Games Team reception.

Ahead of their departure on Tuesday, the Team Ireland European Games Team and the High Performance Unit have paid tribute to the clubs and club coaches of boxers selected by the Olympic Federation of Ireland to contest the Games, and vie for a place in Paris 2024.

At a special reception in Dublin this evening, clubs and families were addressed by Head Coach Zauri Antia and Interim High Performance Director, Tricia Heberle. Every club coach, 11 in all, was presented with a certificate of recognition, marking the occasion of the selection of their boxer to contest for Team Ireland at these Games. The event recognised and honoured the pivotal and ongoing contribution club coaches make to High Performance boxers, and also gave families the first opportunity to see the team in their Team Ireland kit.

The team departs for Poland on Tuesday; the draw takes place on Thursday, and boxing begins this Friday. A total of 44 places at Paris 2024 are available at these Games. In all weights excepting 75kg, 51kg and 92kg, a semi-final finish will win qualification. In these three weights, a finals finish is required.

50kg Daina Moorehouse; Bray, Co. Wicklow.

Paris Scholar, Daina, is emerging in to the Elite ranks following a glittering underage career, which included European Youth & Junior golds. She holds multiple Irish titles. Most recently won silver at the Usti nad Labem Grand Prix, boxing for Team Ireland

54kg Jennifer Lehane, Asbourne, Co. Meath

Jenny is a teacher who took a career break to focus, full time, on her Olympic dream. Jenny, of Dublin City University BC,  is a former Irish Elite champion at 57kg and the 2022 Usti nad Labem Grand Prix gold medalist.

57kg Michaela Walsh, Belfast, Co. Antrim

Michaela is Tokyo Olympian, the reigning Commonwealth Games champion and the 2022 European Bronze medalist. A member of Emerald BC, she is the 2023 Usti na Labem champion. She is zero-ing in on becoming a double Olympian.

60kg Kellie Harrington, Dublin

Kellie is the reigning lightweight Olympic Champion and, in the last 12 months, has added a European title, and golds at Strandja and Usti to her impressive list of achievements. Kellie has her sights set on Paris.

66kg Amy Broadhurst, Dundalk, Co. Louth

Amy is a World Champion at 63kg, the reigning lightweight Commonwealth Games champion, and the 2022 European champion at 66kg. This year, she’s focused on her Olympic dream with gold at the 74th Strandja International Tournament.

75kg Aoife O’Rourke, Castlerea Co. Roscommon

Aoife, who boxes out of Olympic BC, Galway, is a Tokyo Olympian who became a double European medalist in 2022.

51kg Sean Mari, Rathfarnham, Co. Dublin

Sean is of Monkstown BC, Dublin, and is the reigning Elite champion, as well as a World Military Games bronze medalist, a European Championship quarter finalists, and 2022 Hajrulahovic Memorial champion

57kg Jude Gallagher, Newtownstewart Co Tyrone

Jude, of Two Castles ABC, is the current Commonwealth Games champion at the weight, and a 2018 World Youth Championship bronze medallist.

63.5kg Dean Clancy, Sligo, Co. Sligo

Dean is Ireland’s 2023 Elite champion. He is of Sean McDermott BC, and in May, won gold at the Usti nad Labem Grand Prix. He is the 2022 Hajrulahovic Memorial champion, and 2022 Nicolae Linca Golden Belt Tournament quarter finalist.

71kg Dean Walsh, Wexford, Co. Wexford,

Dean, of St. Joseph’s/St. Ibar’s, is a 5-time Irish Elite champion across two weights. He is also a European bronze medalist. Dean was a quarter finalists at this year’s Usti nad Labem Grand Prix and 74th Strandja International Tournament.

80kg Kelyn Cassidy, Ballybeg, Waterford.

Kelyn, of Saviours Crystal BC, is the reigning Elite champion, this year’s Usti nad Labem Grand Prix Champion, and a previous Men’s World Championship quarter finalist. He also claimed bronze at this year’s 74th Strandja International Tournament.

92kg Jack Marley, Sallynoggin, Co. Dublin

Jack, who is Sean’s clubmate at Monkstown BC, is a European U22 champion and reigning Irish Elite champ, He also came home from May’s Usti nad Labem Grand Prix with gold.

Work in Boxing: Ulster High Performance Coach

The Irish Athletic Boxing Association (IABA) wishes to recruit a Regional Performance Coach, with the  successful candidate to work in the Ulster High Performance Unit in Jordanstown, Belfast.  Boxing is Ireland’s most successful Olympic sport with a rich history of medal winning performances across multiple Games.  Northern Ireland (NI) has produced some of the countries most talented boxers and Ulster Boxing contributes significantly to Team NI and Commonwealth Games success.  

The Ulster program is an important part of the overall IABA approach to high performance development and sustainable world class performances on an international stage.  This is a great opportunity for a suitably qualified and motivated caoch to make a difference in both a local setting and to the National program.

This exciting role will require a strong technical and tactical knowledge of Boxing, high level planning and communication skills, proficient computer literacy, a good understanding of athlete development and a proven commitment to the development of high performance Boxing.

Duties and Responsibilities:

To assist in the design of relevant training programs within the Ulster High-Performance Unit. To be present when requested in a coaching capacity at all levels of squad training, training camps, sparring camps and international competitions, at home and abroad.

  1. Assist and contribute to Ulster High Performance Unit (HPU) in directing, monitoring and evaluating the impact of training and competition programs and services to athletes.
  2. Coach and prepare athletes for a range of competitions throughout the year and participate in training camps as agreed with Ulster High Performance Lead.
  3. Along with other coaches, plan, prepare and deliver coaching sessions.
  4. Work harmoniously with staff members of the IABA, Volunteers, Club Coaches, Sport Northern Ireland (SNI) and the Sport Institute of Northern Ireland  (SINI) on all aspects of the performance program.
  5. Alongside relevant performance colleagues, work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team in relation to the regional and national teams.
  6. Embrace both full time and part time athletes into the HP Programme as appropriate for athletes at different developmental stages.
  7. In consultation with the Head Coach and SINI sport science and sports medicine service providers, design, develop and implement periodised training programmes for boxers of all levels within the HPU.
  8. To monitor, in partnership with SINI key service providers, the progress of individual boxers towards their goals and targets.
  9. To assist in managing the training programs for the various strands of competition within Ulster HPU.
  10. To input into Talent Identification and Athlete Development Pathways as required.
  11. To contribute to the development and implementation of the National and Regional HP Strategy.
  1. Maintain an accurate register of athlete progress and provide accurate reporting on each athlete as requested by the Performance Lead.
  2. Provide monthly progress reports on both competition and training camps as required.
  3. To develop and deliver session plans and maintain a record of the plans delivered.
  4. Provide cover where appropriate or necessary for HP coaching colleagues and Head Coach on a needs basis.
  5. Assist with the development of club coaches with seminars, training and mentoring.
  6. When and if required to lead on activities and initiatives of the programme as directed by the Performance Director, Performance Coordinator and or Head Coach.

General

  • To attend Ulster Boxing Council and IABA HPU staff meetings as required
  • To keep abreast of current and emerging trends and developments within the sector

Essential Skills and Qualifications

A minimum 1 Star Boxing coaching qualification; a higher grade is desirable.

Minimum of 3 years demonstratable experience coaching elite senior high performance boxers.

Previous experience coaching talented Elite, Youth and Junior athletes in a High Performance boxing setting.

Competent in use of Microsoft Office.

Advance planning and good administrative skills.  

Competent English language skills.

Desirable Skills and Qualifications

2 Star or 3 Star coaching qualification.

Previous experience in performance and pathway planning.

Previous experience in a coaching leadership role in a HP boxing environment.

Commitment to professional development opportunities.

Salary Range:

£30-£35k, subject to qualifications and experience.  

Contract Duration

Initial 2 Year contact with the possibility of extension. A six-month period of probation will apply.

Hours of Work

The successful candidate is expected to work 40 hours per week. However, given the nature of the position, a flexible working arrangement is necessary. Such arrangements will be discussed and

approved with the line manager. These arrangements will also be reviewed by the line manager on a quarterly basis.

The employee will not normally receive any additional payment for hours worked in excess of 40 hours per week, but may be permitted to take time off in lieu of such excess hours worked, if agreed with the line manager.

Annual Leave

The association’s leave year runs from January 1st to December 31st. The employee will be entitled to 21 days leave per annum plus 10 statutory bank holidays. Excess hours can be taken during a holiday period, after agreement with your line manager.

The employee is required to retain a minimum of 3 days leave to cover the Association’s Christmas shutdown period.

Role Locations:

Ulster High Performance, Ulster University, Jordanstown, Newtownabbey, BT37 0QB with some training camp involved with the National High Performance in Dublin, with domestic and oversee travel.

IABA is seeking to recruit a dynamic Development Officer to support the growth of boxing in Sligo.

This role is of strategic importance to the IABA in achieving its strategic development programmes goals and enhancing existing professional structures.

Reporting directly to the National Development Manager, the successful candidates will be
responsible for the delivery of all locally based school, community and club programmes and
administration associated with the effective running of the IABA Development Team.
