3 Team Ireland boxers win through to STRANDJA finals.

Three Team Ireland boxer have won through to their respective finals at the 74th STRANDJA Memorial Tournament in Bulgaria.

Reigning Olympic and European lightweight champion, Kellie Harrington – boxing at light welter – contested her semi final against France, and came away with the 5-0 decision. Her bout was followed by the meeting of 2022 World, European and Commonwealth Games champ, 66kg Amy Broadhurst, and China. Amy was likewise dominant in winning through to her final. Elite champion and European silver medallist, Christina Desmond, will also box for gold tomorrow, after a 5-0 win over India.

80kg Kelyn Cassidy comes home with bronze, following a tough contest against Armenia, and an agonising 4-1 split decision.

Kellie will meet The Netherlands, Amy contests against Germany and Christina will box Poland in Sunday’s finals – bouts 7,8 and 9 in Ring A’s Afternoon session:

Two Team Ireland boxers have won through from today’s Quarter Finals, to the semi finals and podium finishes.

66kg Amy Broadhurst contested against former World silver medalist, Canada’s Charlie Cavanagh. She came away with at least a bronze medal, and will boxer her semi final tomorrow. Also joining her on the STRANDJA tournament podium is 80kg Kelyn Cassidy, who won through following a 3-2 split against Serbia.

Contesting their third bouts of the tournament were 54kg boxers Niamh Fay and Jennifer Lehane. Niamh boxed against Poland, and exits the competition after a 4-1 split in favour of her opponent. Jenny met the USA for the second time at the tournament, and her opponent progresses following a 5-0 win. 51kg Sean Mari, who met Uzbekistan following a prelim win against Algeria yesterday – the UD went his opponent’s way.

Team Ireland was already guaranteed two medals – Olympic lightweight champ, Kellie Harrington, meets France in the 63kg semi finals on Saturday, and European silver medallist, Christina Desmond, boxes her semi on the same day against India.

Team Ireland claims 2 more victories on Day Four at STRANDJA

Team Ireland claimed two more wins on the fourth day of competition at the 74th STRANDJA Memorial Tournament.

51kg Sean Mari, making his tournament debut, contested against Algeria – and came away with a Quarter Final place following a 4-0 win. 80kg Kelyn Cassidy, likewise, won a place in the QFs, with a 5-0 win over the Netherlands.

Both 57kg Adam Hession and 71kg Dean Walsh came out the wrong side of split decisions, against Turkey and Denmark, respectively. Unfortunately, 71kg Aidan Walsh was injured and could not contest his quarter final.

Day Five

Kelyn and Sean are back in the ring for their quarter finals on Friday; Sean meets Uzbekistan in Bout 3 of Ring A’s evening session. In Bout 13, Kelyn vies for a semi finals berth against Serbia.

Also returning to the ring for Quarter Finals are Team Ireland’s two 54kg boxers – Niamh Fay and Jennifer Lehane. Niamh faces Poland in Bout 7 of Ring B’s afternoon session. In the next contest, Jenny contests against the USA – this is the second time in the tournament she has met an American opponent.

66kg Amy Broadhurst is back in action tomorrow, also bidding for a medal. She takes on Canada in Bout 16 of Ring B’s afternoon session.

Reminder: Deadline approaching for applications to SDSP Community Support Fund.

The South Dublin County Council Community Support Fund, under the Community Enhancement Fund 2022 is open for applications at the following link : Communitysupportfund.

The Community Support Fund will support groups, particularly in disadvantaged areas as identified in the Local Economic & Community Plan (LECP):

  • With their non-pay running costs for example energy costs (electricity costs, refuse charges, heating charges) or other non-pay operating costs for example rental/lease costs, insurance bills. Only energy/operating costs relating to 1st April 2022 to 31st March 2023 are eligibleDocumentation submitted for previous schemes by successful applicants for the period 1st April 2022 to 30th June 2022 will not be accepted.
  • Groups will also be able to use the funding to carry out necessary repairs and improvements to their facilities, purchase equipment such as tables and chairs, tools and signage, laptops and printers, lawnmowers, canopies and training equipment.
  • €4,098 has been ring-fenced for Women’s sheds – Current Funding only
