IABA mourns the passing of former President, Tommy Murphy.

Former President of the IABA, Tommy Murphy, has passed away. Mr. Murphy also served as National Registrar, and his family say boxing “was the love of his life”.

Mr. Murphy is predeceased by his beloved wife Anna, brothers Andrew and Patrick and survived by by his daughters Carol and Kim, son in law Patrick, grandchildren Patrick and Keir, his partner Gertrude, brother in law Liam, nephews, nieces, relatives and friends.

Mr. Murphy’s live was one of service to the community – aside from decades of service to boxing, he was a former Mayor and Alderman of Drogheda.

Mr. Murphy is reposing at Townley’s Funeral Home, Crosslanes, Drogheda A92 XN75 on Wednesday evening between 5pm and 8pm.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Peter’s Church, West Street, on Thursday at midday, and can be viewed here: www.saintpetersdrogheda.ie

Boxing of the National U22 Championships is underway this afternoon.

Work in Boxing: High Performance Boxing Coach

The Irish Athletic Boxing Association has a vacancy for a High Performance Coach. The successful candidate will work in the High Performance Unit, led by Zauri Antia, with Olympic, World, European and Commonwealth Games champions and medallists.

This is a dynamic, fluid role, requiring  gold standard boxing technical knowledge and fluency, superb communication skills across a range of stakeholder groups, and commitment to the development of Irish High Performance boxing.

Essential Skills and Qualifications

A minimum 1 Star coaching qualification; a higher grade is desirable

Previous professional experience coaching in a High Performance boxing setting.

Previous professional experience coaching high potential Youth and Junior athletes in a High Performance boxing setting.

Competent English language skills

Desirable Skills and Qualifications

2 Star or 3 Star coaching qualification

Previous professional experience in a coaching leadership role in a High Performance boxing setting.

Team Ireland claim 3 gold and 1 bronze medal at STRANDJA

Team Ireland will come home from the Buglarian Boxing Federations’ 74th STRANDJA Memorial Tournament with a record 3 gold medals, and 1 bronze medal.

Team Ireland will also be returning with the 3rd placed team trophy – Uzbekistan won 1st placed, and home nation, Bulgaria, 2nd. Over 450 boxers from 42 nations contested the tournament, organised by the Buglarian Boxing Federation.

3 boxers contested today’s finals – Reigning Olympic and European lightweight champion, Kellie Harrington, contesting at light welter; 2022 World, European and Commonwealth Games champion, Amy Broadhurst, boxing at welterweight, and 2022 European and Elite light middleweight champ, Christina Broadhurst. All three athletes claimed 5-0 decisions over Netherlands, Germany and Poland, respectively. Team Ireland’s cruiserweight, Kelyn Cassidy, was also awarded his bronze medal today.

“This was an excellent tournament for Team Ireland, with invaluable high-level international rounds for our development athletes. Team Ireland has also doubled the number of medals won at the 73rd STRANDJA. I would like to congratulate not only each and every member of the team on their performances, but also their clubs and club coaches, as well as their families.”

The team returns home on Monday afternoon, landing at Dublin Airport’s Terminal 1 at 2.35pm.
