History Makers: Broadhurst & O’Rourke Win Through To Women’s World Championships.

Team Ireland’s Amy Broadhurst and Lisa O’Rourke will make history on Thursday, becoming the first team mates to contest finals in the same Women’s World Championships.

Amy, of St. Bronagh’s ABC Rostrevor contests at light welterweight (63kg) and met Parveen of India in today’s semi-finals. She was the split decision (4-1) winner. Judges scored Amy’s bout 29:28 28:29 30:27 29:28 30:27

Olympic BC, Galway’s Lisa O’Rourke, sister of Olympian Aoife, boxes at light middleweight (70kg), and saw off home boxer, Turkey’s Selma Caliskan in a unanimous decision win. Lisa’s bout was scored: 28:29 28:29 27:30 28:29 28:29

Amy and Lisa follow in the footsteps of Katie Taylor, who won 5 World Championship golds and 1 bronze during her amateur career, and reigning Tokyo Olympic Champion, Kellie Harrington, who claimed World gold in 2018, and silver in 2016.

Amy’s final, bout 4 of Thursday’s evening session, is against Algeria’s Imane Khelif. Lisa takes on Mozambique’s Helena Alcinda Bpanguane in Bout 5 of the same ring and session. The session begins at 4pm, Irish Time.

Team Ireland Head Coach, Zauri Antia, says “These World Championships have been fantastic for Irish boxing. The performance of every one of our boxers, some experienced at this level and some gaining world experience, shows their training and preparation was excellent – technically, tactically and physically. Istanbul has been a huge experience for all Team Ireland boxers. Katie Taylor (‘s recent victory over Amanda Serrano) was an inspiration to the women heading in to these World Championships. The women’s performance will inspire the men”. Ireland’s men’s team depart for the European Championships in Yerevan, Armenia, in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Under Two Weeks Remaining: Affiliation For The 2022/2023 Season

There are under two weeks remaining to complete the affiliation process for the forthcoming season. Clubs are reminded that there are no affiliation fees for the 2022/2023 season

Unique usernames and passwords for affiliation via the Blocworx portal were issued on Friday, April 29th, along with resources to support completion of the affiliation process.

Please note: Clubs have been able affiliate to the IABA for season 2022/23 since 12:00 pm/noon Saturday 30th April. The affiliation period will run from April 30th to May 31st.Only clubs, county boards and provincial councils which have fully completed the IABA’s affiliation process before 1st June 2022 will continue to enjoy the privileges of membership. Clubs, county boards and provincial councils can still submit applications after this date however, they will only enjoy the privileges of membership from the date on which their application receives final sign off. 

  • Any club, county board or and provincial council affiliating beyond June 1st should be aware that their organisation will not enjoy the privileges of membership between June 1st and the date on which their late affiliation is signed-off on.

Online Affiliation Process:

A link to access the affiliation platform, Blocworx, was emailed to Club Secretaries, on Friday, 29th April.

  • Clubs could begin their affiliation process after midday on Saturday, April 30th.
  • Click on the link and use the unique log-in details provided in the email from IABA head office to access the online affiliation platform.
  • To assist clubs, and to streamline the process, the IABA has included the most up to date membership data from last season 2021/22. 
  • Clubs will have the option of adding new members or deleting members from their overall list.
  • Easy to follow instructional videos will be made available to members.
  • Staff will also be available to assist members with the digital affiliation process.
  • Clubs in Munster, Leinster and Connacht can submit their queries to info@iaba.ie and clubs in Ulster can submit their queries to ulster@iaba.ie

Submission of an affiliation application is not confirmation of successful affiliation.

All applications will be reviewed, in full, and signed off on before a clubs, county boards or provincial council will be deemed successfully affiliated.

For the avoidance of doubt: membership shall only become effective on the date all approvals have been finalised. If a dispute arises in relation to a body’s application for affiliation to IABA which leads to the application not being accepted, any monies paid as part of the affiliation process will be refunded to the body in question.

Clubs can change their mind about affiliating to the IABA.

To do this your club will need to give notice in writing. You can do this at any time up to 31st August 2022 after making your membership application and your entire membership will end. If you or any of your linked members enters a club to use the facilities during the cancellation period, the IABA will charge a proportion of the affiliation fee to cover this period and we will refund the balance of any fees you have already paid.

Clubs will only be viewed as affiliated members of the IABA following receipt of an official affiliation letter of acceptance from IABA head office.

Two Team Ireland Boxers Vie To Up-Grade Women’s World Championships Bronze Medals.

Two Team Ireland boxers will vie to up-grade their bronze medals at the Women’s World Championships in Istanbul, Turkey.

Amy Broadhurst, contesting at 63kg, dominated her Serbian opponent, Jelena Janicijevic, from the opening seconds her quarter final bout to win through to today’s semis. Amy will face Parveen of India in bout 7 of Ring A’s afternoon session, followed 2 bouts later by the meeting of Lisa O’Rourke and Turkey’s Sema Aliskan.

70kg Lisa O’Rourke met Ani Hovsepyan of Armenia in her quarter final; her agility and superior footwork were brought to bear throughout the bout. The final score was a 5-0 win, scored: 29:28, 29:28, 30:27, 30:27, 30:27

Spirits among coaches and boxers are high. Preparation for the championships was good, with great sparring in the training camp in Assisi in Italy – every boxer at the camp came away with improved skills. The team selected for this World Championships had a dual purpose – gaining experience and competing for podium paces. The boxers who were in Istanbul for experience all won bouts, and have now contested at world level. They are changed and improved boxers now. The future of Irish boxing is bright.”

Ireland Win Two Medals At The Women’s World Championships.

Team Ireland has claimed 2 historic medals at the Women’s World Championships in Istanbul, Turkey.

Amy Broadhurst, contesting at 63kg, dominated her Serbian opponent, Jelena Janicijevic, from the opening seconds of the bout. She was the unanimous decision victory. The judges scored the bout 26:30, 27:30, 26:30, 27:30, 25:30 in favour of the boxer in blue.

70kg Lisa O’Rourke met Ani Hovsepyan of Armenia; her agility and superior footwork were brought to bear throughout the bout. The final score was a 5-0 win, scored: 29:28, 29:28, 30:27, 30:27, 30:27

Both boxers are between the ropes in their semi finals on Wednesday.

Amy will face Parveen of India in bout 7 of Ring A’s afternoon session, followed 2 bouts later by the meeting of Lisa O’Rourke and Turkey’s Sema Aliskan.

Olympian, 57kg Michaela Walsh came up against tricky opposition in the form of Kazakhstan’s Karina Ibragimova. This was a testy affair, which ended 30:26, 30:26, 29:27, 30:26, 30:26 in favour of the Kazakh boxer.

Carly McNaul (52kg) met Caroline De Almeida of Brazil in her Quarter Final, and put in a stylish and determined display. It wasn’t to be on this occasion for Carly, and the UD win went to De Almeida on a score of 28:29, 27:30, 27:30, 28:29, 28:29.
