Walsh Wins Through To Women’s World Championship Quarter Finals.

Team Ireland Olympian, Michaela Walsh, as won through to the Quarter Finals of the Women’s World Championships in Istanbul, Turkey.

Michaela contested against Ukraine’s Valeriia Yeroshenko from the blue corner, in a tight and testy bout in which the Irish boxer’s quality won out in a 3-2 split decision win. The judges scores: 27:30, 29:28, 29:28, 27:30, 27:30

Sunday is a bumper day for Team Ireland in Turkey, with five boxers in competition; three in the afternoon session and two in the evening session.

Niamh Fay, at 54kg, is in Round of 16 action in bout 6 of Ring A’s afternoon session, against Romania’s Lacramioara Perijoc. Perijoc last met Irish opposition in the form of Michaela Walsh, while contesting the 73rd Strandja Tournament at 57kg. Walsh came out the victor in that meeting.

63kg Amy Broadhurst is between the ropes in bout 10 of the same ring and session. The lighwelter takes on Sezgin Aslahan Mehmedova of Bulgaria.

52kg Carly McNaul opens proceedings in Ring B’s afternoon session, against Olympian and reigning European U22 champion, Nikolina Cacic.

In the evening sessions, 50kg Caitlin Fryers is first up of Team Ireland’s boxers. She meets Italy’s Giordana Sorrentino in bout 3 in Ring A, while 66kg Kaci Rock boxes in the last bout of the day in Ring B, bout 12, against Ukraine’s Anna Lysenko.

In order to be entitled to receive the Prize Money, the IBA says the” Boxer must win at least one bout at the Competition and reach place from 1st to 3rd (gold to bronze medal)”.
