IRISH BOXING ENJOYS TREMENDOUS JUNE

The HP Unit and Irish boxing has enjoyed a tremendous June with medals galore and seven Olympic places secured at the Tokyo Olympics.

Two gold, two silver and three bronze is the total medal haul from the European Olympic qualifiers in Paris and the European U/22 Championships which concluded in Italy tonight.

The boxers, the HP Unit and its Director Bernard Dunne, Central Council, coaches and staff and the clubs deserve enormous credit for the recent success in the build up to Tokyo.

Kellie Harrington claimed gold in Paris and Dean Clancy secured gold in Italy,

Michaela Walsh and Adam Hession won silver and Aidan Walsh, Aoife O’Rourke and Jack Marley bagged bronze in Paris and Italy.

Michaela Walsh and her brother Aidan also made history after becoming the first boxing siblings to qualify for the Olympics..

The medal haul, particularly in the Olympic qualifiers, will also impact on the seeding in Tokyo while Ireland’s performances in Italy this week will ensure that there’s plenty of competition for places on the Irish squad for the qualifiers for Paris 2024, one hundred years after Ireland first entered the Olympics independently at Paris 1924.

Overall, Irish boxing, which has secured seven medals against some of the world’s top boxers in the two tournaments it has entered this year, is in a healthy condition on the road to Tokyo and beyond.

GOLD AND SILVER FOR IRELAND IN ITALY

Dean Clancy claimed gold at the European U/22 Championships in Roseto, Italy today.

But Adam Hession had to settle for silver after his fight with Armenia’s Artur Bazeyan was stopped in favour of Bazeyan in the second round.

Clancy won on a walkover after Israeli light welter Ahmad Shtiwi faled to show up for the final.

Clancy won five fights en route to gold.

Hession was right in the bout in the first round, trading punches with Bazeyan and more than holding his own.

But he took two standing counts in the second round and the ref called a half after the second count.

Ireland will be taking home one gold, one silver and one bronze, courtesy of Jack Marley, from Italy.

CLANCY AND HESSION INTO FINALS AT EURO U/22 CHAMPIONSHIPS

Dean Clancy and Adam Hession are through to the finals of the European U/22 Championships in Roseto, Italy.

But Jack Marley bowed out this evening.

Clancy won the first round 10-9 across the board and never really looked back from that score, the Irish champion seeing off the challenge of Italy’s Matteo Ara with a bit to spare this afternoon.

Hession advanced on a walkover after Polish bantam Pawel Brach failed to show up for their 56kg semi-final.

Marley was down in the first round of his heavyweight clash with Georgia’s Artyan Yardanyar but fought back bravely to take one of the judges with him in the second round and four judges with him in the final frame.

But it was not enough to stop Yardanyar earning a unanimous decision.

Clancy and Hession are now guaranteed at least silver.

CLANCY,HESSION AND MARLEY INTO SEMI-FINALS

Dean Clancy and Adam Hession are guaranteed at least bronze at the European U/22 Championships in Roseto, Italy.

But Kieran Molloy had to settled for a top eight finish after losing his quarter-final bout this afternoon.

Hession forced Bashir Bajwa of Germany into a standing count in round three en route to a commanding win.

The Irish champion, showcasing head and body shots, took rounds one,two and three comprehensively.

Clancy and France’s Lounes Hanraoui were involved in an extremely close bout with the French light welter taking the first round 4-1, but Clancy, constantly edging toward his opponent, taking the second 3-2.

That left it all to play for in the third and final round, and Clancy, who landed a well-timed combo late in the frame, took the decision and a guaranteed bronze.

Molloy had to contend with a harsh public warning for dropping his head and a cut near his left eye in the second round against Akbar. The Galway welter found the target with some solid punches throughout this encounter but his opponent, the No. 1 seed, was not to be denied.

Meanwhile, Jack Marley posted a dominant win over Moldova’s Andrei Zaplitni to guarantee Ireland at least a third bronze medal.

Marley controlled the tempo and terms of this bout to earn four 30-27 scores and one 30-26 score in an emphatic win.
