CHEMISTRY WORLD CUP FINALS

Michaela Walsh on top of the podium

Antrim’s Michaela Walsh is the new 57kg Chemistry World Cup champion.

The EU titlist beat India’s World Youth gold medallist Sakshi Choudary on a unanimous decision to top the featherweight podium in Cologne,Germany this afternoon.

Boxing well within herself, Walsh won all three rounds to become the first Irish female Chemistry World Cup champion.

Earlier today, Antrim’s Carly McNaul, who is the first Irishwoman along with Walsh to medal at this level, had to settle for silver after an extremely close flyweight final with Armenia’s Anush Grigoryan.

Dublin heavyweight Tony Browne lost out to heavy Muslim Gadzhimagomedov in the 91kg decider.

The Russian, who was beaten by Joe Ward in the 2017 European final, had his hands more than full with Browne in all three rounds before taking a points decision after an open and tactical contest.

However, it was a top class performance from the Dubliner against a world class opponent.

Ireland will be taking home gold, courtesy of Walsh, 2 silver, courtesy of McNaul and Browne, and bronze, courtesy of Joe Ward from the 2019 Chemistry World Cup.

BROWNE, WALSH AND MCNAUL INTO FINALS IN COLOGNE

Dublin heavyweight Tony Browne, pictured, joined Michaela Walsh and Carl McNaul in Saturday’s finals at the Chemistry World Cup after an impressive last four win tonight in Cologne, Germany tonight.

But three-time European Elite champion Joe Ward bowed out of the tournament on a split decision to German light-heavy Abu Lubdeh Abdulrahman.

Browne was on top in all three rounds against Brandon Rees, the only Australian at the 45th edition of the competition, en route to a unanimous verdict – 30-27 x 4 and 29-28.

He’ll now meet Russia’s Muslim Gadzhimagomedov, who Ward beat in the 2017 European final, for gold tomorrow.

Ward landed the majority of cleaner shots and dictated the pace of his three rounder against Abdulrahman but the judges leaned toward the German – 29-28,29-28,29-28, 28-29,28-29.

Earlier today, Antrim pair Carly McNaul and Michaela Walsh upgraded their guaranteed bronze medals to at least silver in Cologne.

McNaul saw off highly rated Indian flyweight Pinki Raini on a split decision after a slugfest and Walsh followed that with a unanimous verdict win over Romanian feather Lenuta Lacramioara.

McNaul, who has won three fights in three days so far, is back in action for gold versus Armenia’s Anush Grigoryan tomorrow and two-time Commonwealth finalist Walsh meets India’s Sa Sakshi for the 57kg title.

Both women are the first Irish female boxers to medal at the Chemistry Cup, which has since been rebranded as the World Cup and moved from Halle to Cologne for the 45th edition of the tournament.

The 2019 World Cup marks the first time that Irish boxing – which won its first medal (silver) at the tournament in 1992 courtesy of Olympic finalist Wayne McCullough – has three boxers in the finals.

McNaul, Walsh and Browne will be in action in bouts 1, 3 and 8 in the early sessions which begins at 1pm (Irish time) Saturday.
