BROADHURST PUTS STEVE STAUNTON UNDER PRESSURE

Current European U/22 champion Amy Broadhurst looks like she’s going to get the decision over former Republic of Ireland star and manager Steve Staunton in the Dundalk Democrat All-Time great poll.

The 2018 World Elite quarter-finalist is putting the ex Liverpool defender under pressure, as Staunton’s ex Irish boss Jack Charlton might put it.

However, the only decision Broadhurst is focused on this weekend is the one on offer versus Clann Naofa BC standout Shauna O’Callaghan.

Both women meet in the light-welter semi-finals at the National Stadium tomorrow night with the winner advancing to face defending champion Moira McElligott of the St Michael’s Athy BC on the 80th anniversary of the official opening of the first purpose-built boxing venue in the world in 1939.

Broadhurst, who is ranked No. 8 in the world, added to her medal-laden CV last month after taking home her second successive U/22 crown at lightweight but has moved up to light-welter for the Elites.

“I was delighted with my performance, I did everything that was asked of me, I didn’t make many mistakes either so I was very happy with it, said the 21-year-old  former European Youth and Junior champion after winning 16th Irish belt.”

Chloe Fleck and Carol Coughlan kick off the penultimate weekend of the Elite Championships in one of two outstanding quarter-finals on Friday.

The Francis BC will be guaranteed a title if uncle and nephew Myles Casey and Tommy Casey beat Portlaoise BC and Drimnagh BC feathers Christian Cekiso and Patryk Adamus and Cork’s World Youth finalist and 2014 Youth Olympian Christian Desmond is in against Tina Donnelly at welter.

Clare Grace

“It would be nice to win it out, definitely. That’s the plan and we’ll see how it goes at the Stadium, said Macroom southpaw Desmond.

“Semi-finals at the National Elites are always special and I’m very much looking forward to the challenge. I’ve put in a lot of hard work in the gym and I’m ready to go.”

Grainne Walsh, the defending titlist who claimed the inaugural Best Female Boxer Award the 2018 Elites, meets Gillian Duffy in the corresponding welterweight semi-final.

Welter is one of the new Olympic limits for women. The 69kg class and feather have been added to fly, light and middle for Tokyo 2020.

The weigh-ins for Friday’s and Saturday’s bouts will be held between 8am and 9am and 12pm at 1pm at the National Stadium.

25 bouts will be completed this weekend to complete the lineups for the finals on Saturday, February 23.

Finals night will be broadcast live on TG4.

The IABA wishes all athletes the very best of luck at the home of Irish boxing this weekend.

MOLLOY EYES UP SECOND SUCCESSIVE TITLE

Kieran Molloy

Kieran Molloy, pictured, is planning to put in another big performance in the last four of the Irish Elite Championships at Dublin’s National Stadium.

The Galway welterweight beat Mayo’s Aaron Daly on a unanimous decision last weekend to move to within two wins of defending his 69kg title versus Dublin’s Luke Maguire on Saturday.

Limerick’s 2015 World Junior finalist Paddy Donovan and Antrim’s 2018 Commonwealth Games finalist Aidan Walsh go head-to-head in the corresponding 69kg semi-final.

Defending middle and light welter champions Michael Nevin and Wayne Kelly, both of the Portlaoise BC, crashed out of the tournament to Gabriel Dossen and James McGivern last Saturday.

Molloy, who won his first Elite belt and the Best Male Boxer Award in 2018, is determined not to become a notch on the belt of a young prospect out to make a name for himself at the home of Irish boxing.

“A good start,” said Molloy after his win over Daly. “I felt very comfortable in there and I’m looking forward to the semis where I will put in another big performance.

“I’m feeling confident heading into these Championships. I’ve had a lot of international fights in the past year and gained a lot more experience.

”I never let myself get too rusty, always ready for whatever’s next. A few champions lost (last weekend). That’s the way it goes sometimes, and they lost to top class opponents. The future is looking great for Irish boxing.”

Meanwhile, the flagship tournament of Irish boxing resumes on Friday evening. Limerick’s Myles Casey, a former Elite champion, and his nephew Tommy Casey can guarantee the St Francis BC a title if they win.

The Treaty City featherweights – who both box out of the St Francis club – meet Christian Cekiso of the Portlaoise BC and Patryk Adamus of the Drimnagh BC in the last four.

Cork welter Christina Desmond, a World Youth finalist and European Elite bronze medallist, is in against Tina Donnelly, while defending champion Grainne Walsh, who received the inaugural Jimmy Magee Best Female Boxer at the 2018 Elites, and Gillian Duffy face off in the corresponding semi-final.

Dundalk’s European U/22 champion and World Elite quarter-finalist Amy Broadhurst and Shauna O’Callaghan clash Friday. Moira McElligott awaits in the light-welter final.

Rio Olympians Joe Ward and Brendan Irvine and EU champion Kurt Walker are out of the Championships with hand injuries.

NATIONAL ELITES WEEKEND

Tommy Hyde

Rebel County light heavy Tommy Hyde will be aiming to edge a step closer to bridging a 72-year family gap when he meets Belfast ace Paul McCullagh in the light-heavyweight semi-final at the National Elite Championships at the National Stadium on Saturday.

In 1945, six years before the National Stadium was officially opening and just a few months before the guns fell silent on WW2, Hyde’s great grand uncle, also Tommy Hyde, vowed to bounce back after dropping a points decision to Jackie King in the welter final.

Cork-native Hyde, who boxed out of the Sunnyside BC and represented Ireland at three different limits, remained true to that vow and claimed his first Elite belt twelve months later after beating Billy O’Mahony at the Stadium.

Hyde junior, meantime, claimed  a Senior belt in December – “just to get the ball rolling”, as he put it – and is now aiming for the big one at the same venue where his great grand uncle had his hand raised in victory almost three quarter of a century ago.

“That’s the plan. I’m very much looking forward to my first fight at the Elites. I’ve put in a lot of work in the gym and I can’t wait for it,” said the Mayfield BC man.

“Thomas O’Tooole and David Bicevis go head-to-head in the corresponding light heavy semi-final in the penultimate weekend at the National Elites.

Myles Casey celebrates winning his first Elite title in 2015

The tournament resumes Friday and will feature European U/22 champion and World Elite quarter-finalist  Amy Broadhurst versus Shauna O’Callaghan.

The St Francis BC in Limerick will be guaranteed a title if Tommy Casey and Myles Casey, who are both related and who both box out of the Treaty City unit, emerged victorious in the feather semi-finals.

Christian Cekiso (Portlaoise) and Patryk Adamus (Drimnagh) will have a lot to say about all Shannonside 57kg finals, however!

Friday’s and Saturday’s  weigh- ins – 8am to 9am and 12pm to 1pm at the National Stadium.
