RAPHOE BC IMPRESS AT VILLA PARK

Donegal middleweight Jason Quigley was at ringside to cheer on the Raphoe BC versus a Birmingham Select at Villa Park last Friday night.

In front of a crowd of over 600 people in the Holte Suite at the home of Aston Villa, Raphoe were edged out 7-4.

“It was a great experience for our boxers in a massive stadium with an electric atmosphere,” said Raphoe chairman Peter O’Donnell.

Among Raphoe’s winners were Dennis ‘The Menace’ Lafferty, who overcame Bradley Ferrie of the Second City boxing club in Birmingham. Lafferty has a knack of pulling big results from the hat and he did so again here against the former British youth champion.

Dominic Bradley from Errigal BC overcame Louis Coley in one of the fights of the night.

Eoin McGarrell, another former Irish champion, was well in his fight with Jay Turner until Turner hit the bullseye. A fire-cracking body blow wounded McGarrell and the fight was halted in the third round.

World and European youth bronze medallist Jude Gallagher, from Two Castles in Newtownstewart, was set to guest for Raphoe on the night but his opponent, Joe Collins, withdrew from the bout on Friday morning.

GOLDEN GIRL RESULTS

European U/22 champion Amy Broadhurst claimed gold at the Golden Girl Box Cup in Boras, Sweden yesterday.

But European Youth and Junior champions Daina Moorehouse and Lauren Dempsey had to settle for silver.

Broadhurst convincingly beat Russia’s Alexandra Ordina in the light-welter final on a unanimous decision to take home the 64kg title.

But Dempsey was unlucky to lose on a 3-2 split verdict  to Thailand’s Olympic and World Youth champion Panpatchara Somnuek in the featherweight decider.

“I thought I done enough to win it and so did my coaches and everyone else in the stadium. But I’m delighted with my performance as she’s a year older than me and is the World and Youth Olympic champion, I hope I will get her again,” said Dempsey of the Ryston BC.

Moorehouse was beaten on a unanimous decision by Thai light-fly and World Youth silver medallist Nillada Meekon in the 48kg final.

A number of Irish athletes competed in Boras. Please click here for all results.

Dublin’s Baldoyle BC also impressed in Boras with their 4-strong team bringing home 3 gold and 1 silver.

Robyn Preston secured gold with no one in her weight.

Megan Coleman earned gold with an excellent display of boxing winning her first fight on a unanimous decision and winning her semi final and final with stoppages.

Ellie Preston won her final with a first round stoppage.

Emma Flannery won her first fight very convincingly and put a great display in the final against a Russian girl who is 3 times European and 2 times world champion with over 200 fights to end up with a silver.

Baldoyle was ranked 5 overall in the competition out of 45 clubs featuring much higher than national teams and much bigger teams.

Abbey Gibbons of Cherry Orchard BC also attended with the Baldoyle team and put in an excellent display of diploma boxing against a French girl that went on to claim gold.

The Irish Athletic Boxing Association (IABA) celebrated a tremendous year at its Annual Awards Night at Dublin’s Louis Fitzgerald Hotel this evening.

Dublin lightweight Kellie Harrington claimed the Best Overall Boxer Award to compliment a year which saw her win World and European Elite gold and bronze, multi-nation silver and an eight Irish Elite belt.

Harrington’s performances at the World and European Championships, both of which yield AIBA ranking points, lifted her to No.1 in the AIBA World 60kg rankings. She’s also collected the Best European Female Boxer of 2018 Award in the Netherlands last month.

Kurt Walker returned to the top of the podium this evening. The Antrim bantamweight beat England’s current European Elite champion Peter McGrail in the EU final in Spain in November, while Amy Broadhurst and Aoife O’Rourke took home gold and silver from the European U/22 Championships.

Broadhurst, who claimed a second successive Irish U/22 belt last weekend, also reached the quarter-finals at the World Elites in New Delhi last November and is ranked No. 8 in the world at light-welter.

The Irish male and female European Junior and Schoolboy/girl teams secured almost 30 medals in Continental competition between them and also finished in the top five in the medals tables in both competitions, while Dearbhla Rooney maintained Ireland’s proud legacy of having medalled at every Youth Olympics since Singapore 2010 at Buenos Aires 2018.

Rooney also earned silver at the European Youths, a tournament which yielded gold for Daina Moorehouse.

Domestically, the Drimnagh BC and Olympic BC in Mullingar couldn’t be separated and shared the Best Club and Best Coaching Staff plaudits, while former IABA Presidents Breandán Ó Conaire and Nicky White were inducted into the IABA Hall of Fame.

Dermott McDermott and Ben McGarrigle received the Best R&J Awards and Mick Quigley and Johnny Geraghty were presented with Lifetime Achievement Awards in recognition of decades of service to Ireland’s most successful Olympic sport.

The Outstanding Services Awards went to Anna Moore, Harry Robinson, Raymond Lee, Noel Burke snr., Simon Walsh and Eugene O’Kane.

“Last year was a fantastic year for the sport with medals won at every level from Elite down to Schools in World and European competition against some of the best in the world, said IABA President Dominic O’Rourke.

“Everyone involved deserves enormous credit for an incredible year in international competition. The Association is proud of the achievements of our athletes, coaches, clubs and staff both domestically and internationally.”
