2019 ELITE CHAMPIONSHIPS ENTRIES

Please scroll down for entries for 2019 Irish National Men’s and Women’s Elite Championships at Dublin’s National Stadium.

Boxing begins Friday at the home of Irish boxing..

World Elite champion Kellie Harrington will be aiming to edge a step closes toward matching Ken Egan’s and Jim O’Sullivan’s record of ten belts at the 2019 edition of the tournament.

The Dublin lightweight, who has won eight Elite belts at three different weights – welter, light-welter and light – defends her lightweight crown this month.

Galway’s Kieran Molloy, who claimed his first title last year and the Best Male Boxer Award, is in the hat at 69kg along with former Elite titlist Dean Walsh and Limerick’s World Junior finalist Paddy Donovan.

Molloy believes that the ring craft he picked up on the international circuit last season will stand to him against Ireland’s most formidable welterweights.

“I’m feeling confident heading into these championships again,” he said. “I’ve had a lot of international fights in the past year and gained a lot more experience which I will show come fight day. Preparation has went great and I’m looking forward to it.”

Grainne Walsh, who claimed the women’s welter belt last year and the inaugural Jimmy Magee Best Female Boxer Award, could meet Cork’s European Elite bronze medallist Christina Desmond.

The dilemma for the Walsh and Desmond  – and for female boxers worldwide in the welter and middleweight classes – all along was that middleweight, which Desmond has fought at, was an Olympic weights and welter wasn’t.

However, welter and feather have been added to fly, light and middle as Olympic limits for women for Tokyo 2020.

“I’ve two choices now and I’m good to go,” said Desmond, a former World Youth finalist.

Meantime, the men’s middleweight division could see World Youth medallists Michael Nevin, the defending champion, and Gabriel Dossen, the current U/22 champion, cross swords, while European U/22 champion Amy Broadhurst recorded a stunning win over Russia’s 2016 European Elite champion Alexandra Ordina in the Golden Girl Box Cup lightweight final in Sweden last weekend.

“I was delighted with my performance, I done everything that was asked of me, I didn’t make many mistakes either so I was very happy with it,” said Broadhurst who has made a blistering start to 2019, retaining her Irish U/22 belt before racking up a unanimous decision over Ordina.

IABA WELCOMES INCREASED INVESTMENT IN BOXING

The IABA welcome the overall increase in the investment into the sport of Boxing in Ireland for 2019 which was announced by Ministers Ross and Griffin earlier today. Please click here.

The funding process for 2019 was completed in December 2018 and all NGBs were formally notified of their awards in December, which was appreciated by the IABA as it greatly assisted in the planning process in the lead into this Olympic qualification year.

The IABA were also encouraged to see Carding, and high performance funding in general being awarded for 2019 & 2020. This provides greater certainty up to Tokyo 2020 and is a major step towards multi annual funding.”
