Olympic BC coach Michael Mongan believes that Gabriel Dossen has a tough encounter ahead of him versus Dublin’s John Joe Nevin at the National Stadium tomorrow night.
Dossen goes head-to-head with the Crumlin BC ace for the middleweight title at the National Men’s and Women’s U/22 Championships finals.
Both men beat Limerick opposition – Edward Donovan and Jason Harty – and ex European medallists in the last four on unanimous decisions in the last four to set up what could be the bout of the night at the home of Irish boxing.
World Youth semi-finalists Dossen, who boxes out of the Olympic BC, is eyeing up second successive U/22 belts.
“Gabriel performed brilliantly (versus Jason Harty), especially in the first and second round. He showed real composure and maturity throughout the bout in a difficult contest against a very good opponent that he could not take for granted, said Mongan, pictured above with Dossen outside the Stadium.
”He’s another tough and tricky opponent in the final against John Joe Nevin who also beat a former European champion in Edward Donovan. He’s looking forward to the task to put him in good stead for the National Elites next month.”
Amy Broadhurst, also the current European U/22 champion, meets Isobella Hughes for back-to-back titles following her decision over Jennifer Lehane in the lightweight class. Hughes impressed en route to victory over Cork’s Aisling Murray.
Broadhurst reached the last eight at the 10th AIBA World Women’s Elites in New Delhi last November and is ranked No. 8 in the world at light-welter but has dropped down a notch for the National U/22s.
“Everything’s going well, looking forward to getting in and boxing, I have no clue what’s to come for me but we will just have to wait and see,” said the Dundalk southpaw.
Limerick’s Patrick Donovan, a World Junior silver medallist, is targeting a 13th title versus Aaron Daly at welter and told Inside the Ropes that he’s aiming to improve all the time. Daly advanced at the expense of Michael Kinsella in the semi-finals.
Donovan believes that the 32nd Olympiad is the collective aspiration of all boxers.
“It’s all progress, I hope to perform well and victory will follow. I want to keep building to become a better fighter. I would love to compete in it (Tokyo 2020). It would be a dream, and bring gold home to Ireland. I think we all as boxers have that dream”
Meantime, the IABA have advised all athletes to bring their passport to Friday’s weigh-ins between 8am and 9am and 12pm and 1pm at the National Stadium.
The IABA is using the National U/22s as part of the selection process for the European U/22 Men’s and Women’s Championships in Vladikavka, Russia (March 8/18).
European U/22 finalist Aoife O’Rourke, Kevin Sheedy, who claimed a Munster belt last weekend, and Niamh Early are also defending their National U/22 titles on Friday evening.
“Looking forward to it,” said O’Rourke who is in against Renee Roche for middleweight gold.
