NATIONAL U/22 FINALS

JP Hale and Colm Murphy, pictured in action last weekend, meet for a second time in six days at the National U/22 finals at the National Stadium on Friday night.

Both men served up the proverbial thriller at the Ulster Hall in the Ulster Elite finals last Saturday in a bout hailed as one of the best of the Championships.

They go head-to-head from bantamweight gold on Friday with Hale holding the advantage from their recent featherweight final courtesy of a 4-1 split decision.

Niamh Early, Paddy Donovan, Gabriel Dossen, Kevin Sheehy, AIBA World No. 8 Amy Broadhurst and Aoife O’Rourke are the defending champions  at the home of Irish boxing.

Broadhurst, the current European U/22 titlist who was unlucky not to win at least bronze at the AIBA World Elites in New Delhi last November, faces Isobella Hughes for lightweight gold.

Dossen is in against John Joe Nevin in a three rounder which Dossen’s coach, Mike Mongan, reckons will be a cracking encounter.

Dossen, a former World Youth bronze medallist, has been sparring with Elite champion Kieran Molloy, pictured below, ahead of Friday’s final at the Stadium.

Early, a former World Junior medallist, meets Caitlin Fryers and Limerick pair Sheehy and Donovan face Thomas Maughan and Aaron Daly.

O’Rourke, who reached the European U/22 final in Romania last April, aims for her second successive U/22 belt versus Castlebar BC middle Renee Roche.

Meanwhile, all finalists at next Friday’s National U/22 finals are advised to bring their passports to the National Stadium for the weigh-ins.

The weigh-ins will be held between 8am and 9am and 12pm and 1pm at the Stadium.

The IABA is using the National U/22s as part of the selection process for the European U/22 Men’s and Women’s Championships in Vladikavka, Russia (March 8/18).
