NATIONAL UNDER 22 CHAMPIONSHIPS 2019

Venue: National Stadium, Dublin.

Dates: January 11th, 12th 18th, 25th & 26th

Weigh-in Six Units on Sunday 6th January 2019 from 9.00 -10.00am
Munster: Fairgrove Hotel
Leinster: St Michaels Athy
Dublin: Ringside Cub National Stadium
Connacht: Castlerea Boxing Club
Antrim: Dockers Club
Ulster: O’Neills Arms Hotel Toomebridge

Results of weigh-ins to be sent by email to sally@iaba.ie for Monday 7th January. Please ensure all information is correct.

Entry Fee: €20 Per Boxer payable at weigh-in

Draws: Tuesday January 8th at 2.00pm. Results will be emailed to Club secretaries and will be put on the IABA website. Please do not call the office.

Boxing: January 11th at 7.00pm. Other times contingent on entries and will be announced at the draw.

Duration of rounds: Men & Women 3×3 Minutes

Weights: Men Kg 49-52-56-60-64-69-75-81-91-91+ (10 weights)
Women Kg 48-51-54-57-60-64-69-75-81-81+ (10 weights)

Age Requirements: Boxers born years 1997 – 2000

Entries: On the scales on Sunday 6th January 2019 no pre-entry required

Only boxers that weigh in for the National Under 22’s will be eligible for selection for the European Under 22 Championships.

Males must present themselves clean shaven and all boxers must advise the doctor of any medication they are taking or have taken in the preceding 4 weeks. Anti Doping testing may be carried out at any stage of the championships. It is imperative that all boxers adhere to the Anti-Doping Rules and Regulations- any queries regarding this matter please contact Mr Larry Morrison Anti-Doping Officer IABA on 0860292476

Non Pregnancy Declaration forms must be signed.

Attire: Boxers shall have one red and one blue vest. Coaches must wear track suits and runners at all sessions and endeavour to set a high standard of hygiene at all times, no caps/hats are allowed. Boxers must not wear long sleeved shirts under vests. Hair must be tied back and swimming hats/hair nets should be worn under headgear.

No Red, Orange or pink Gum shields.

Only qualified coaches will be allowed in the corner.

Sportsmanship: all decisions must be accepted in a sporting manner any complaints must be addressed to the Chief Official Stephen Connolly. Please show respect to all Ringside Officials.

RTE SPORTS AWARDS

 

 

Ireland fly half Johnny Sexton claimed the RTE Sportsperson of the Year Award on Saturday night.

Kellie Harrington was shortlisted for the award after winning five fights in eight days en route to World Elite gold in New Delhi last month.

Harrington’s win extended Ireland’s dominance of the lightweight class in women’s World Elite boxing.

“To bring back gold from the worlds was just the icing on the cake,” said Harrington who also won European Elite bronze and multi-nation silver in 2018.

Since the inaugural tournament in 2002, Ireland has won won the lightweight belt six times,.Canada (2), Russia and France are the only other nations to win 60kg gold.

Unified professional champion Katie Taylor, who has won five of the above world gold medals, was also shortlisted for the RTE Award.

Wicklow light-fly Dainne Moorehouse and Leitrim feather Dearbhla Rooney were short listed for the RTE Young Sportsperson on the Year Accolade

Moorehouse, who boxes out of the Enniskerry BC, claimed European Youth gold in Italy in April and Rooney (Sean McDermot BC) won silver.

Rooney also won Olympic Youth bronze in Buenos Aires in October.

Irish gymnast Rhys McClenaghan won the Young Sportsperson Award while the Irish women’s Hockey Team claimed the Team of the Year Award in a public vote.

 

BOXERS NOMINATED FOR RTE YOUNG SPORTSPERSON AWARD

Wicklow light-fly Dainne Moorehouse and Leitrim feather Dearbhla Rooney, pictured above with Irish team mates, have been nominated for the RTE Young Sportsperson of the Year Award.

Moorehouse, who boxes out of the Enniskerry BC, claimed European Youth gold in Italy in April and Rooney (Sean McDermot BC) won silver.

Rooney also won Olympic Youth bronze in Buenos Aires in October.

The podium finish maintained Irish boxing’s proud tradition of having medalled at every Youth Olympics – Ryan Burnett (2010, gold) and Ciara Ginty and Michael Gallagher (2014, silver and bronze) and Rooney (2018, bronze).

Thirteen nominees are in the hat for  RTÉ Sport Young Sportsperson of the Year accolade.

The winner of award, for athletes under the age of 20 before January 1, 2019, will be chosen by senior members of RTÉ Sport and announced live during the awards ceremony this Saturday from 9.20pm on RTÉ One.

World Elite champion Kellie Harrington has been nominated for the Sportsperson of the Year Award.

Harrington, Moorehouse and Rooney and compatriots helped Irish boxing claim 41 medals in top international competition in 2018 in a vintage year for the sport.

Dormant Account Funding 2018

The Irish Athletic Boxing Association (IABA) were pleased to learn of their successful application to Dormant Account Fund which will be used to improve participation within the sport of Boxing.

The IABA would like to thank Minister Shane Ross, Minister Brendan Griffin and Sport Ireland for their continued support following this announcement of investment into Sport through the Dormant Account Fund 🤝🥊

SCHOOLBOY TRAINING NOTICE

 

There will be no further schoolboys squad training in 2018.

However, the IABA President Dominic O’Rourke requests a meeting of all club coaches who had Irish Champions at Boy 1/2/3/4 ages in 2018, to take place at 11am this Saturday, December 15th, in the Ringside Club at the National Boxing Stadium. At this meeting, the objectives and training plans for 2019 will be laid out and coaches will have an opportunity to have any questions answered.

The schoolboy coaching staff want to thank all the boxers, club coaches and parents who attended squad training during 2018. The commitment shown by the boxers at training was top class and we hope that this will continue in 2019.
