NATIONAL SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS RESULTS – DAY 3

The first of the weekend’s quarter-finals bouts were decided at the home of Irish boxing.

The second session begins tomorrow morning at 11am.

Weigh-ins – 8am to 9am and 12pm to 1pm at the National Stadium.

One minute’s silence, tolled in and out by the ringside bell, was observed before tonight’s session in memory of the late Eoin Byrne, Elizabeth Joyce, Michael Lyons and Noreen Morrissey.

NO SCHOOLBOY TRAINING THIS SUNDAY

 

A reminder to all boxers that there will be no schoolboys squad training this Sunday, November 18th, due to a Level 1 IABA coaching course taking place in the High Performance Gym at the National Boxing Stadium.

Training will resume the following Sunday, November 25th, for all Irish Champions at Boy 1and Boy 2 level in 2018. The Boy 3 and Boy 4 Champions will return on Sunday, December 2nd.

HARRINGTON INTO LAST 16 AT WORLD ELITES (UPDATED)

Kellie Harrington progressed to the last 16 of the AIBA World Women’s Elite Championships in New Delhi today.

The Dublin lightweight beat New Zealand’s Tory Garton on a unanimous decision in Ireland’s opening bout at the Indira Ghandi Stadium.

Final scores –  30-26,30-26,30-26,30-27,30-27 to Ireland with Harringtion finding the target with the vast majority of cleaner punches against her aggressive opponent.

Harrington will now meet India’s Sarita Devi, who beat Switzerland’s Sandra Brugger on a majority 4-0 verdict today, in the last 16 on Sunday.

Ceire Smith, Michaela Walsh, Amy Broadhurst and Aoife O’Rourke box Saturday.

If you are still involved with your club can you please return your assessment forms, signed by your club secretary/head coach and the €30 fee so I can have you registered on Sport Ireland’s database

We have made a number of attempts to facilitate you in this regard but for various reasons you have been unable to participate

Please note that if on this occasion the completed forms are not returned by the 30th November 2018 for the attention of Stephen Connolly, National Stadium, 145 South Circular Road, Dublin 8 your name will be deleted and you will not be permitted to carry out any duties as a coach.

HARRINGTON IN ACTION IN WORLD ELITES ON FRIDAY

Kellie Harrington meets New Zealand’s Tory Garton in Ireland’s opening bout at the AIBA World Women’s Elite Championships in New Delhi, India tomorrow.

Both lightweights will be in the ring at approximately 2pm (Irish time) Friday.

If Harrington, a silver medallist at light-welter at the 2016 Worlds, wins the last 32 bout she’ll be back between the ropes on Sunday, along with Grainne Walsh, in the last 16.

Ceire Smith, Michaela Walsh, Amy Broadhurst and Aoife O’Rourke box Saturday.

The 10th edition of the tournament got underway today.

Irish Elite boxing is battling on two international  fronts this weekend, with the men in Spain and the women in Asia.

Domestically, the National Senior Championships (formerly Intermediates) resume at Dublin’s National Stadium tomorrow night.
