MIXED FORTUNES FOR IRELAND IN SPAIN

IRELAND will be bringing home at least two bronze medals from the EU Men’s Elite Championships in Valladolid, Spain.

Antrim’s bantamweight Kurt Walker joined Galway’s Kieran Molloy in Saturday’s semi-finals after a classy performance against Poland’s Jaroslav Iwanow today.

But Laois middle Michael Nevin was desperately unlucky to lose out versus England’s Carl Fail after a cut over his right eye forced him to retire late in the second round.

Walker was on top in all three rounds en route to a comprehensive unanimous decision – with four 10-8 rounds thrown into the bargain.

Iwanow, durable throughout, was on the floor from a short hook in the second, but that was ruled a slip. “I’m very happy.Just working on different stuff. felt good in both my fights, said Walker.

“The next fella has a different style, so I’ll have to sit down with the coaches and work out a plan for him.”

Nevin boxed superbly in the first round. His backhand was finding the target in the second but the ringside doctor called a halt after the Portlaoise BC man picked up what Irish coach John Conlan, who is working Ireland’s corner with Eoin Pluck, described as a nasty cut.

Fail was ahead on points at the time of the stoppage.

“Kurt won 5-0, very dominant. Michael gave it everything. So gutted for this extremely talented boxer,” said Irish team manager Stephen Molloy.

Walker meets Georgia’s Artyush Gomtsyun in the semi-finals on Saturday while Molloy faces England’s Pat McCormack. Friday is a rest day at the tournament.

ST ANNE’S BC 50TH ANNIVERSARY

The St Anne’s BC celebrate their 50th Anniversary on Saturday night at the Castlecourt Hotel.

The famed Mayo unit opened its doors in October 1967. Jack Lynch was Taoiseach at the time and Eamon de Valera President. The Beatles had two massive hits in the charts – Penny Lane and Love Me Do.

Since its foundation over half a century ago, the club has won 102 national titles.

“We’re hoping that everyone will come along on the night and talk to us; tell us if we were good. Or bad even!” St Anne’s President Peter Mullen, who claimed the Westport club’s first title in 1971, told Midwest Radio.

“That’s what we’re hoping for, all the people that have come through the club over the years, it’s hard to think of them all and they won’t all be notified, but we’re hoping they will hear about and just talk to us and give us some of their memories.”

The late John ‘Porky’ McGreal, a founder member of St Anne’s, was Mullen’s coach.

“The foundations were laid back then and have continued to grow ever since as champions of all shapes and sizes walked through the doors of the Pete Callaghan Centre,” Mullen added.

Mullen, Ray Moylette and Shannon Sweeney claimed Elite belts for St Anne’s, with Moylette putting the unit on the map internationally after becoming the first Irish boxer to win World Youth gold in Mexico in 2008.

Moylette, along with Joe Ward, secured double European Elite gold in Turkey in 2011 to help Ireland finish in 2nd spot in the medals table against the continent’s finest.

“Congratulations to the St Anne’s on their anniversary. Over the last 50 years they have done Mayo and Irish boxing proud domestically and internationally and here’s to the next 50 years for the club,” said IABA President Dom O’Rourke.

AFANASEV BOWS OUT IN SPAIN

Kiril Afanasev had to settle for a top eight finish at the EU Championships in Valladolid, Spain today.

The Dublin heavy was beaten on a unanimous decision by Croatia Toni Filipi over three, three minute rounds.

Afanasev enjoyed a good opening stanza. Settling in behind his jab, he had the World Series of Boxing athlete in trouble on the ropes near the end of the first, although the Croat responded well in the final 15 seconds of the frame.

The Irish champion took a standing count from a short right hook in the second and Filipi won the third to guarantee himself at least bronze.

Antrim’s Kurt Walker and Laois’ Michael Nevin box tomorrow versus Poland and England.

Friday is a rest day at the tournament. The semi-finals, which will feature Galway’s Kieran Molloy, and finals will be decided Saturday and Sunday.
