Irish squad

Russia, England and Ireland, in that order, finished in the top three in the rankings table at the 31-nation European Junior Men’s and Women’s Championships in Russia.

The tournament concluded yesterday. Click here for rankings tables and here for additional stats.

Eleven nations shared the gold medals.

Ireland, using a 25-strong squad, won 27 of 50 bouts, averaged 2.0 bouts per athlete and secured 2 gold, 3 silver and 8 bronze medals.

Team Ireland are due to arrive home from Anapa via Dublin Airport at 12.05pm on Thursday afternoon (Terminal 1).

OLYMPIC YOUTH SEMI-FINAL RESULTS

Dearbhla Rooney will meet New Zealand’s Te Edmonds in a box-off for bronze at the Olympic Youths in Buenos Aires on Wednesday night.

The Leitrim feather, aiming for a place in the finals and at least silver, was beaten on a 4-1 split decision by Thailand’s Panpatchara Somnuek in tonight’s 57kg semi-final over three rounds.

Dean Clancy, pictured above, lost his bid to reach the 52kg decider in the Argentine capital today.

The Sligo flyweight was beaten on a unanimous decision by England’s Ivan Price in the last four of the tournament after three close rounds.

Clancy will now meet Brazil’s World Youth bronze medallist Luiz de Olivera in a box-off for bronze tomorrow.

“I thought I dominated the whole fight to be honest with you,” said Clancy after today’s reversal.

The first round I got the win, the second round I started bad, but I finished well and thought I would have got it. The third one I thought I had nicked it as well. I don’t know what they’re seeing with unanimous decision.”

The Rooney versus Somnuek bout was a repeat of the 2018 World Youth clash which the Thai won on a 3-2 split in Hungary in August.

“I’m disappointed with the result, I thought I had the decision, I thought I did enough there, said Rooney.

“I’ll have a look at the score after, but I don’t know, to be honest I’ll have to look over it. I’m just very disappointed now. I met her in the worlds – she beat me in the prelim by a split decision, I’ll have to look over it now to see where it all went wrong.

“I’m not used to boxing boxers with a style like that. My style is usually the more aggressive one, pushing them back, whereas she has a very aggressive style of boxing herself, pulling forward all the time. I thought I did enough with hooks and jabbing.”

Dmitry Dimitruc is working Ireland’s corner in Buenos Aires.

EUROPEAN JUNIOR C’SHIPS CONCLUDES IN RUSSIA

Irish squad

Patrick Myers lost out in his bid for gold after an epic light-heavy battle with Azerbaijan’s Murad Alllahverdiyev at the European Junior Championships in Anapa, Russia today.

The Sligo teen and the Azeri, meeting in the second last bout of the tournament, went at each other hammer and thongs for the entire three rounds of the 80kg final.

But Alllahverdiyev got the decision – 29-28 x 4 and 30-37 – to take the title. Myers will be bringing home silver.

The total medal haul for Ireland’s 25 strong squad in Anapa is an impressive two gold, three silver and eight bronze. 52% of the squad finished in podium positions.

Earlier today, Tipperary’s Ellie Mai-Gartland and Kildare’s Lauren Dempsey struck double gold this morning against Romania and Russia, but Sinainn Glynn and Lisa O’Rourke had to settle for silver.

Mai-Garland was on top from opening to closing bell against Romania’s Maria Gheorghe in a powerful statement of intent and will to win, while Dempsey, giving away a lot of height to Azalia Amineva, subjected the Russian feather to a torrid three rounds en route to a split decision victory.

Glynn and Iiona Sarembo battled each other all the way down to the wire but it was the German lightweight that got the nod after three close rounds.

O’Rourke found the target with the vast majority of cleaner shots – accurate punch stats an estimated 3-1 to Ireland – against Zofiya Stackhovyak but it was the aggressive Pole who earned a 3-2 split decision against her more skillful opponent.

Team Ireland are due to arrive home at 12.05pm on Thursday afternoon via Dublin Airport (Terminal 1).

*Dominic O’Rourke, President of the IABA, presented Mai-Gartland with her bantamweight gold medal this morning. Russia’s former World Elite champion Sofya Ochigava, who was beaten by Katie Taylor in the London 2012 final, also presented medals at the 54kg ceremony.*

OLYMPIC YOUTH SEMI-FINALS

Dean Clancy and Dearbhla Rooney box for places in the 2018 Olympic Youth flyweight and featherweight finals in Buenos Aires tomorrow.

The Sligo and Leitrim duo meet England’s Ivan Price and Thailand’s Panpatchara Somnuek with at least silver up for grabs.

The semi-finalists in Clancy’s and Rooney’s weights have two shots at a medal. If they win their last four bouts, they’re guaranteed at least silver.

If they lose they go into a box off for bronze.

Clancy and Rooney convincingly won their quarter-finals bouts in Buenos Aires yesterday.

Irish coach Dmitry Dimitruk said the Irish pair have taken a lot of confidence from Sunday’s victories and are eager to get in the ring tomorrow.
