MEDIA INVITE – TEAM HOMECOMING

The Irish Athletic Boxing Association invites all media to today’s (October 18th) homecoming from the European Junior Men’s and Women’s Championships in Anapa, Russia.

The team are due to arrive home via Dublin Airport at 12.05 pm this afternoon (Terminal 1).

Ireland won 13 medals – 2 gold, 3 silver and 8 bronze – and finished in 3rd spot in the medals table at the 31-nation tournament.

Dearbhla Rooney also won bronze at the Youth Olympics last night to complete a memorable week for Irish boxing.

ROONEY WINS BRONZE AT YOUTH OLYMPICS

Dearbhla Rooney, pictured on medals podium tonight, will be bringing home bronze from the Youth Olympics in Argentina.

The Leitrim feather recorded an emphatic unanimous decision over New Zealand’s Tai Shelford-Edmonds in tonight’s bronze medal box-off in Buenos Aires.

Rooney could even afford to throw away a point – she was done for pushing in the third – en route to a landslide 29-24,29-25,29-25,29-25,29-26 – verdict.

The European medalist forced her opponent into two standing counts after the sanction in the third and final round.

“Irish boxing never comes home without a medal,” said proud Irish coach Dmitry Dimitruck after the 57kg victory.

Rooney, who won two of her three fights at the 3rd edition of the Games, wasn’t leaving Argentina without something to show for it.

“I’m just absolutely over the moon, I said yesterday that I wasn’t coming home without a medal. I felt comfortable in there. I think a lot of boxing is mental strength, she said.

“If you told me this last year, I never would have dreamed that I’d be on the Youth Olympic team let along bringing home a bronze medal.”

Rooney’s podium finish completes an epic week in which Irish boxing also claimed 13 European Junior medals and one Olympic Youth bronze in two continents.

Tonight’s victory also maintains Irish boxing’s proud legacy of having won medals at every Youth Olympics. Current World pro champion Ryan Burnett won gold in Singapore in 2010 and Ciara Ginty and Michael Gallagher claimed silver and bronze in China in 2014.

Dean Clancy lost out in his bid for a medal earlier today.

The Sligo flyweight was beaten on a unanimous decision – 30-27 across the board – by Brazil’s World Youth bronze medallist Luiz de Oliviera in a box-off for 52kg bronze.

de Oliviera, switching from southpaw to orthodox, probably took the first round, but Clancy, who found the target with clean shots of both hands after backing his opponent onto the ropes, won the second on the unofficial cards.

The Brazilian detonated a fine left in the third but Clancy responded with a right straight down the middle in the early exchanges of a see-saw third stanza.

“It didn’t go my way, it is what it is. He got the better of me today. He boxes like a Cuban, he’s very sharp,” said Clancy. “Every fight is a valuable experience.

Team Ireland in Buenos Aires comprises of a squad of 16 athletes from 9 sports. The team are due to arrive home on Sunday.

Rooney, Clancy and Lauren Kelly represented Irish boxing in Buenos Aires. The trio qualified through the European Youth Championships.

EUROPEAN JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS PICTURES

Newly crowned European Junior champions Ellie Mai-Gartland and Lauren Dempsey believe that dreams do come true.

The Tipperary and Kildare pair won double gold at the European Junior Championships after beating Romania’s Maria Gheorghe and Russia’s Azalia Amineva in Anapa, Russia yesterday.

Clonmel BC bantam Gartland, whose twin brother Jerome is also an Irish boxing champion,  dominated Gheorghe and Ryston BC feather Dempsey silenced the home fans after earning a split verdict win over Amineva.

Patrick Myers, Lisa O’Rourke and Siniann Glynn claimed silver and Irish female captain Leanne Murphy, Jon McConnell, Leah Gallen, Kaitlyn Doyle, Kori Goad, Michael Donohoe, Barry O’Connor and Breda Quilligan won bronze.

The record medal haul and performance of the entire 25-strong squad saw Ireland finish in third spot in the rankings table at the 31-nation competition.

Two-time Irish champion Gartland, who has yet to be beaten internationally after seven bouts, put in the hours in the gym en route to the top of the podium.

She said: “It means everything to me, it’s a dream come true. I have been training so hard the past year for this moment and I couldn’t have done any of it without the help of my brother/coach Jamie Lonergan and my other coach Martin Fennessy.

“I’d like to thank them for putting the effort into me, training me morning noon and night, helping me make the weight and bringing me sparring,” added the new champion who along with Dempsey also thanked the Irish coaches and staff.

When the going go tough in Tuesday’s final with the home favourite, Dempsey started to believe in herself.

She said: “To be honest today was the best day of my life. I worked so hard to get where I am today and I can’t believe it. I have never believed in myself until today.

“I’m so grateful for it and I just can’t believe it, all the hard work that my trainers put into me mentally and physically, I just can’t believe it.

“I had three very hard competitions and today was the hardest as she was home girl, but I just dug deep. I really wanted it, so I went for it.”

Team Ireland are due home at 12.05pm tomorrow (October 18) via Dublin Airport (Terminal 1). All media, family and friends are invited to attend Thursday’s homecoming.
