CELTIC BOX CUP 2018

The eagerly anticipated Celtic-Box Cup begins in Dungarvan, Waterford on Friday evening next.

Teams from mainland Europe, Britain and Ireland have registered to compete in the 6th edition of the international tournament which will be decided over three days on September 28/29/30.

The Irish Defence Forces have rolled out the heavy artillery again with two teams entered this term.

The Defence Forces secured their third team trophy at the 2017 Celtic Box Cup – they also won it in 2013 and 2015 –  after edging out Limerick’s St Francis BCBoxing Canada‘s Thomas Blumenfeld received the Best Male Boxer Award while Boxing Australia‘s Kristy Harris took home the Best Female Boxer Award.

Ireland’s Kellie Harrington, a World Elite finalist, claimed the Best Female Boxer Award in 2015.

The Defence Forces, and Gardai, played a leading role in the evolution of Irish boxing, particularly at the Olympics.

At the 1924 Games in Paris, which marked the first time that Ireland entered the Olympics independently, and the 1928 Games in Amsterdam, the vast majority of the two Irish boxing squads at the 8th and 9th Olympiads were drawn from the rank and file of the Defence Forces and Gardai.

Meanwhile, Australia’s Boxing Queensland are the only non-Irish side (2016) to claim the Celtic Box Cup Team Award which goes to the squad with the most medals.

Munster President Gerry O’Mahony, the Secretary of the Dungarvan BC, anticipates a big weekend of boxing in the picturesque seaside town.

“We have a number of clubs from Portugal entered and teams from the UK will be there along with numerous Irish clubs. It promised to be very competitive over the three days and we extend a very warm welcome to all teams entering the 2018 Celtic Box Cup.”

The Celtic Box Cup was founded in 2013 by Gerry O’Mahony. Since then it has evolved into one of Europe’s Premier tournaments.
