NATIONAL SENIOR CADET SEMI-FINALS TONIGHT

The vast majority of semi-finals at the National Boys and Girl Senior Cadet Championships will be decided at Dublin’s National Stadium and adjacent Ringside Club tonight.

Boxing begins at 6pm in both venues ahead of Saturday finals – and outstanding semi-finals –  which begin at 11am at the National Stadium.

All athletes must weigh-in for their finals between 8am and 9am at the National Stadium.

The IABA are using the National Senior Cadet as part of their selection process for October’s European Junior Championships in Anapa, Russia.

The IABA wishes all athletes, clubs and coaches the very best of luck on Friday and Saturday.

Irish amateur boxing is proudly sponsored by Liffey Crane.

KELLY AND GALLAGHER: IRISH CAPTAINS FOR WORLD YOUTHS

Lauren Kelly and Jude Gallagher will captain the Irish female and male squads at the World Youth Championships which begin in Budapest, Hungary next Tuesday.

Team Ireland will be using a four-strong women’s team and a three-strong men’s panel at the 81-nation tournament.

The Irish squad will have their final training session at the High-Performance Centre in Abbotstown, Dublin tomorrow and leave for Budapest early Saturday.

Both Irish skippers are European medallist and Irish champions.

“Jude’s a talent, only 16 years of age,” said Irish head ccach Billy McClean of the Tyrone teenager.

“He’s a youth international boxer with a host of titles behind him so he’s got tremendous potential, especially when you think he will still be a youth boxer next year.”

227 men and 167 women are registered to compete in the Hungarian capital.

WORLD YOUTH CHAMPIONSHIPS COUNTDOWN

Ireland occupies 8th position in the World Youth Men’s Youth Championships table since Mexico 2008 with the countdown to the 2018 edition of the tournament beginning in earnest this week.

Boxing at the 2018 World Youths begins in Budapest, Hungary next Tuesday. A 7-strong squad will represent Ireland.

This year marks the first occasion that the competition is a joint male and female event.

Irish female boxing has claimed 1 silver and 5 bronze at this level since the inaugural World Women’s Youths in Turkey in 2011.

Caitlin Fryers finished in one of those podium position and Irish head coach Billy McClean believes she’ll impress in Hungary.

“Caitlin’s a little star who trains extremely hard – she’s extremely dedicated, one of the hardest trainers we have in the programme at the minute,” McClean told the Irish News.

“Already she has a wealth of international experience and the thing about Caitlin is she won’t be afraid of anybody in these World championships, no matter who she gets.

“She’s very focused, she’s been in the system for a number of years now, and she’s definitely a potential medallist.”

Team Ireland are putting the finishing touches to their preparations at the High-Performance Centre in Abbotstown and leave for Budapest on Tuesday.

227 men and 167 women are registered to compete in the Hungarian capital.

SEVEN IRISH R&Js PASS AIBA EXAMS

All seven Irish referees and judges (R&Js) sitting the recent AIBA 2-Star Referee and Judges Course and Exams got the decision, IABA National Registrar Stephen Connolly is delighted to report.

The Course and Exams were run in conjunction with the Monkstown BoxCup and in collaboration with the IABA in Dublin in late June and July this year and was the first such AIBA R&J 2-Star event to be hosted in Ireland.

Mr Pat Fiacco of Canada and Mr Zoltan Szalma of Hungary were the two International Boxing Association (AIBA) tutors at the course location in the Louis Fitzgerald Hotel and Monsktown BoxCup.

Thirteen international R&Js took part and all seven Irish participants – Aideen Floyd, Mal Scott, Paul McEvoy, Martin O’Neill, Stephen Kelly, Loughlin Gannon and Michael Gill  –  upgraded their status from AIBA 1-Star to AIBA 2-Star.

The AIBA last year launched plans to increase the number and standards of R&Js in order to maintain and create the best officials at all levels worldwide.

Dominic O’Rourke, President of the IABA, hailed all concerned.

“Congratulations to all seven Irish referees and judges on completing the course and passing their exams and to all who completed the course and exams,” he said.

“Fantastic achievements all round as all seven Irish referees and judges completed the course and exams and all seven passed with flying colours.”

“Well done to all concerned,” added Stephen Connolly. “It is a detailed and demanding course and exam and all seven Irish participants did exceptionally well.”
