DAY 2 RESULTS – BRANDENBURG YOUTH CUP

John Paul Hale and Cork’s Owen McDonagh ensured that Ireland will be taking home at least three bronze medals from the Brandenburg Youth Cup in Frankfurt/Oder, Germany.

The Ulster and Munster pair recorded 4-1 split decisions wins over Germany and Russia today to join Adam Hession in Friday’s semi-finals.

David Oliver Joyce, Sean Crowley, Pierce O’Leary, who picked up a hand injury, and Mayo’s Owen McDonagh bowed out of the 23rd edition of the tournament at the quarter-final stage after close bouts.

Hale pulled out all the stops to beat Germany’s Rasual Hamad. The Star BC ace landed the vast majority of the cleaner shots this afternoon and was full value for his impressive win.

Likewise with talented Leeside Lough BC prospect McDonagh who dictated his contest with Nikita Sevostyanov, the Leesider staggering the Russian orthodox back with a sweeping left in the third.

Hession, McDonagh and Hale will be back between the ropes tomorrow looking to upgrade to at least silver.

The finals will be decided on Saturday.

DAY 1 RESULTS – BRANDENBURG YOUTH CUP

TEAM IRELAND experienced contrasting fortunes on Day 1 of the Brandenburg Youth Cup in Frankfurt/Oder this afternoon and evening.

David Oliver Joyce and Pierce O’Leary advanced following impressive wins, but Christian Preston and Jack Lawlor bowed out at the last 16 stage in Germany.

Joyce, finding the target with heavy shots, beat Germany’s Mert Caliskan to advance to the quarter-finals and O’Leary dominated Caliskan’s compatriot Aman Poorasghar with regular right hooks, the occasional backhand thrown into the bargain, en route to a unanimous decision.

Preston battled Russian welter Timur Nurushev all the way down to the final bell with both young men trading plenty of leather in a three-rounder which could have gone either way.

Lawlor also found the target against the high-guard and compact tactics of German light-heavy Georgy Gubeladze but took a standing county in a fiery final minute of a hard-punching contest.

Irish team manager Gerry O’Mahony praised the performances of the Irish quartet, adding that he believed that Preston did enough to get the decision but that it was a very close bout.

Six Irish boxers are in last-eight action tomorrow.
