ELITE SCHOOLBOY SQUAD TRAINING

Elite Schoolboy Squad Training takes place this Sunday morning, February 18th, at 11am in the High Performance Gym at the National Boxing Stadium. Two sessions of boxing take place on the day with training finishing at approximately 3:30pm.

All Irish Champions from last season at Boy 1/2/3/4 plus Cadet Champions at those ages are invited to attend. Any boxer who will be unable to attend should contact Elite Schoolboys Coordinator Paddy Gallagher at paddythegaa59@gmail.com or 087-6286269.

Boxers are asked to bring water for two sessions and good quality 16oz sparring gloves.

NATIONAL ELITE QUARTER AND SEMI FINALS

Dervla Duffy

Eight quarter-finals and ten semi-finals will be decided at the National Elite Championships at Dublin’s National Stadium tomorrow night.

Ashley McCullough meets defending featherweight champion Dervla Duffy in the first of Friday’s last-four bouts.

An Albert Foundry BC stand out, McCullough is a niece of Barcelona 1992 Olympic silver medallist and ex-WBC World bantamweight champion Wayne “Pocket Rocket” McCullough, a multiple Irish Elite champion and Albert Foundry BC man.

Her dad, Alan, will be working her corner tomorrow evening and the former Irish and Ulster champion has vowed to leave it all in the ring in a weight class which could very well become one of the new Olympic limits for women.

“I’m fit strong and in the best shape I’ve  ever been in my life,” said McCullough. “The road leading back here has been a tough one at times with training twice a day. but I knuckled down and gave it 100% and that’s exactly what I’ll be doing tomorrow night.”

Cork’s Tiegan Russell and Belfast’s Michaela Walsh meet in the corresponding women’s featherweight semi-final on Saturday.

Feather has been added to the three existing Olympic limits – fly, light and middle – for women for the Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires later this year and could be included on the program for Tokyo 2020.

NATIONAL ELITE CHAMPIONSHIPS WEEKEND

Kevin Sheehy

Five male and female defending champions are between the ropes in the last-four of the National Elite Men’s and Women’s Championships at Dublin’s National Stadium this weekend.

Galway’s Patrick Mongan and Wexford’s Dean Walsh, who is aiming for five on the trot, are in action in the lightweight and welterweight semi-finals versus Dubliner George Bates and Galway’s Kieran Molloy on Friday evening and Limerick’s Martin Keenan meets Dublin super-heavy John McDonnell on Saturday two wins away from retaining his 91kg+ belt.

Mongan versus Bates is a repeat of the 2017 final which the  man Olympic BC edged on a 3-2 split decision, while the Walsh versus Molloy three-rounder has the potential to be one of the bouts of the weekend at the home of Irish boxing.

Dervla Duffy, the defending featherweight champion, goes head-to-head with Ashley McCullough and welterweight titlist Grainne Walsh awaits the winner of Friday’s Connie Vaughan and Ciara Sheedy three-rounder.

Eight male and female quarter-finals will also be decided on Friday. The 2015 European Youth champion Michael Nevin trades leather with David Biscevas at middleweight.

In form Limerick heavyweight Kevin Sheehy has impressed for the St Francis BC so far this season. The Shannonsider claimed National Senior and U/22 belts for Andy Lee’s former Alma mater in December and January.

He’s in against Athlone’s World University bronze medallist Ken Okungbowa in the last-eight looking to edge a step closer to securing the vacant heavyweight title and a third, and ultimate, Irish belt in as many months.

Okungbowa was beaten by London 2012 Olympian Darren O’Neill, who pulled out of the 2018 Championships with a hand injury, in the 2017 decider.

Belfast’s current EU Elite champion Michaela Walsh goes head-to-head with Cork’s Tiegan Russell for a place in the featherweight final on Saturday evening, while former World Junior champion, Olympic Youth finalist, Ciara Ginty, pictured below, meets Katie Taylor’s ex Bray BC team-mate Gillian Duffy.

World and European Elite silver and bronze medallists Kellie Harrington and Christina Desmond received byes in the lightweight and middleweight finals.

Irish female boxing is building up toward the 2018 European and World Elite Championships scheduled for May and November in Poland and India.

It’s also expected that the International Boxing Association (AIBA) will unveil two extra female weights for females at Tokyo 2020 this year. Women currently box in the flyweight, lightweight and middle limits at the Olympics.

Meanwhile, the 2018 National Elite Championship finals are scheduled for February 24 at the National Stadium.

A second National Elites for women and men will be held in September and November this year on the road to the qualifiers for Tokyo 2020.

Tickets for the Liffey Crane Hire Elite finals can be purchased over the phone on 01-4533371 with debit cards. Tickets are priced at €40 Ringside, €30 Angles and €25 Gallery.

UPDATE CHILD PROTECTION

Dear Club Secretary,

HIGH IMPORTANTANCE COMMUNICATION

You will be aware from previous communications that on Monday 2nd October 2017 Minister Katherine Zappone T.D., Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, announced that following almost two years of preparations all remaining provisions of the ROI Children First Act 2015 would commenced on 11th December 2017.

I also explained that Section 11 (1) of the Act requires an organisation that is providing a relevant service to undertake a safeguarding risk assessment. For the Irish Athletic Boxing Association a risk assessment is an exercise where each  club examines all aspects of its service from a safeguarding perspective to establish whether there are any practices or features of the club that have the potential to put children at risk when they are in the club’s care. Not all of the risks included in the Risk Assessment template may be applicable to you.

The IABA and our affiliated clubs have a statutory obligation (ROI) to carry out a safeguarding risk assessment of any potential harm to children while they are participating in our activities.

All affiliated clubs are required to sign off the Safeguarding Risk Assessment document, sign off the Safeguarding Statement and display the Safeguarding Statement by 11th March 2018.

Please read Steps 1 – 3 below.

STEP ONE – PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING BEFORE COMPLETING THE RISK ASSESSMENT;

  • Please note the definitions of the column below at bottom of document
  • The club risk assessment document has been pre-populated for you to consider at your club meeting
  • It is important to note that each risk identified has been ranked but can be amended following your club meeting discussions
  • You may wish to include other risks of potential harm that are specific for you or some risks listed may not be applicable to you
  • This risk assessment document, when completed, must be adopted and noted by the Club Committee/Board and signed by the Chairperson/President and the Children’s Officer.
  • You are not required to hold the document on file in your club

STEP TWO – PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING REGARDING THE CHILD SAFEGUARDING STATEMENT

  • Following the sign off on the safeguarding risk assessment, please review the Child Safeguarding Statement, sign and date the document
  • You may wish to add your club logo
  • A position called the Relevant Person is included in the Children First Act 2015 (sect 11 (3) (g), and is defined as “as a person who is appointed by a provider of a relevant service to be the first point of contact in respect of the provider’s Child Safeguarding Statement. For IABA affiliated club purposes, the club children’s officer will be the relevant person for club child safeguarding statement.

STEP THREE

  • As per Section 11 OF THE Children First Act 2015, you are required to display the Child Safeguarding Statement in a prominent place where you operate. If possible I recommend that you laminate/frame the statement.

STEP FOUR

  • Please send a one line email to david@iaba.ie to advise that steps 1 to 3 have been completed.

Section 11 of the Act also states that the provider of a relevant service shall, at intervals of not more than 24 months, undertake a review of the provider’s child safeguarding statement and the first such review shall be undertaken not more than 24 months from the date on which the first child safeguarding statement was prepared. Therefore this will be an ongoing task and within the next 24 months, our first review will be undertaken.

Thanks in advance for your co-operation.
