Ireland record 6 wins on Day Three of the European Junior Championship.

Ireland have wracked-up 18 wins at the European Junior Championships in Sarajevo, a third of them on today’s Day Three.

48kg Michael O’Reilly has a a quick turn-around from Monday’s win, and was back between the ropes in Bout 9 of Ring A’s Afternoon Session, against Turkey’s Ozer Egeberk. He’s booked his place in the quarter finals following a UD – 29:27; 29:28; 30:25; 30:26. In Bout 15 of the same ring and session, 57kg Joseph Mihai took on Russia’s Pavel Kondrashov in his Last 16 contest. Despite a brave performance, it wasn’t to be for Joseph, following a 5-0 decision in favour of his opponent – Judges scored the bout 26:30; 26:30; 26:30; 26:30; 26:30.

50kg Kalib Walsh made a statement tournament debut against Poland’s Adrian Drewnowski, with a resounding 5-0 victory, and progression to the quarter finals. Judges scored the bout 27:30; 27:30; 28:29; 27:30; 27:30. In Bout 16 of the same ring and session, 60kg Desmond Sweeney boxed Russia’s Maksin Sobolev, which was waved off by the referee within the first round, in favour of the Russian boxer.

In Ring A’s Evening Session, 52kg Eddie Corcoran met England’s Lewis Coston. Eddie, making his tournament debut, has won through to the quarter finals, with a 5-0 win (29:28; 29:28; 29:28; 29:28; 29:28) 63kg Edward Harty returned for his second bout of the tournament, against Azerbaijan’s Kanan Aslanli. Edward was the winner on a 4-1, and progresses through to the quarter finals on a scoreline of 29:28; 28:29; 28:29; 28:29; 28:29.

In Bout 8 of Ring B’s Evening Session, 54kg Jason Donoghue is back in action. He contests against Russia’s Maksim Chaplygin. 66kg John Donoghue, meanwhile, takes on Azerbaijan’sAdil Zalov in Bout 15.

370 boxers are contesting the championships. 28 federations, in all, are competing at the tournament: Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, England, Estonia, Georgia, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Kosovo, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Russia, Scotland, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Turkey.

IABA last contested this tournament in 2022 and returned with a massive haul of ten medals: 2 gold, 4 silver and 4 bronze. Ava Henry (Docklands) and Tadhg O’Donnell (Four Kings) claimed gold; silvers were won by Grace Conway Dowling (Tredagh), Niamh Keogh (Olympic L), Mary McDonagh (Sliabh Luachra) and Jamie Collins (Drimnagh). Bronze medalists were Alfie Jordan (Olympic L), John Harty (Portlaoise), Cillian Reilly Lennon (Jobstown) and Sophie Curley Gray (Dealgan).

Day Four

9 Ireland boxers are contesting on Wednesday, which is women’s quarter finals day.

50kg Paige Nickels returns for her second bout of the tournament, at quarter finals stage. She boxes for a podium place against Turkey’s Kubra Cicek in Bout 3 of Ring A’s Afternoon Session.

In Bout 4 of Ring B’s Afternoon Session, 48kg Isabel Nolan is also contesting for hardware in her quarter final. She meets Russia’s Kseniia Vishnevskaia. 57kg Kayleigh Byrne is back in action in Bout 10 of the same ring and session. She’ll box her quarter final against home boxer Asija Turkovic.

In Bout 3 of Ring A’s Evening Session, 46kg Abby Molloy will box for a semi-final place against England’s Lily Bassett. 66kg Cassie Henderson makes her tournament debut in Bout 7 of the same ring against Laura Wanda Szydlowska of Poland. 3 bouts later 75kg Carly Norris contests her first bout of the championships against Russia’s Daria Antipova.

Also making her first appearance of the tournament, in Bout 3 of Ring B’s Evening Session is 63kg Kaysie Joyce. She’ll box Croatia’s Agata Stajcer. Four bout later, 70kg Chloe Poleon meets Sara Scorrano of Italy. In Bout 9, 80kg Alanna Kenny takes on Anna Buzuleva
