Ireland’s European Schools medal haul rises to 7.

70kg Dominic Barrett is assured of at least a bronze medal – he was back in action today, contesting his quarter final against Turkey’s Ibrahim Taksin. Dominic was dominant and decisive, winning all but one round on one judge’s score card. The 5-0 decision sees him through to Thursday’s semi finals, where he’ll contests against Moldova. The Judges scores this evening were: 30:27; 30:27; 30:27; 29:29; 30:27.

48kg Christy Joyce contested his second bout of the tournament, a quarter final, against Russia’s Khamzat Fargiev. That bound ended in an RSC 2. 50kg Francis Maughan boxed for a medal against Georgia’s Mirian Voloshin and despite a valiant effort, the 5-0 decision went to his opponent on a scoreline of 26:30; 27:30; 27:30; 28:29; 27:30. 75kg Ethan Duffy began his tournament at quarter final stage, against Lithuania’s Emilis Kavaliunas – he gave the bout his all, but the 5-0 decision went to his opponent on a scoreline of 30:26; 30:26; 29:27; 30:26; 30:26.

Thirty nations are participating: Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, England, Estonia, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Russia, Scotland, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia and Turkey. There are 363 boxers in the tournament – 363 boys and 240 girls. August 8th is a rest day at the tournament. This is the 21st iteration of the championship. The first Europeans, for male boxers 13 and 14 years old, was held in Rome, Italy in 2003. The most successful team was Turkey, who went home with six gold medals. Second place went to Russia, with three champions, while Ireland, Italy, Azerbaijan and England had one gold medal each. The first EUBC Schoolgirls European Boxing Championships was held in Albena, Bulgaria in 2018. Fifteen years after the inaugural Schoolboys Championships, 12 girls were crowned European Champions.

Semi Finals

In Ring A’s Afternoon Session (Bout 6) 44kg Alannah Murphy boxes for a place in the finals against Glafira Rokhina of Russia. In Bout 9, 60kg Vanessa Doyle meets Petritsi Panagiota. In Ring B’s Bout 2, 38kg Kayla Harris opens her campaign against Russia’s Ivana Rolikova. In Bout 6 of the same ring and session, 46kg Aleigha Murphy contests against Turkey’s Sude Temucin. And in Bout 10, 57kg Ruth Dossen meets Italy’s Mira Amadori. In Bout 12, 64kg Robin O’Reilly also meets Italian opposition, in the form of Gaia Caldarella.
