Sean McComb believes it’s harder to medal at the World Elite Championships than the Olympics.

“There’s not the same publicity with a world medal as an Olympic medal but it’s 10 times harder to win,” the Holy Trinity light-welter told today’s Irish News in the countdown to the World Elites in Hamburg, Germany in August/September.

June’s European Elite Championships in the Ukraine will act as the sole qualifier for Hamburg.

McComb also reckons that moving up a notch from light to light welter was the way to go.

“It was the best decision I’ve ever made,” added the European Games bronze medallist.

“That was the best I’ve ever boxed at the Irish seniors, I’ve had a lot of compliments. I felt so much in control. I just treated it like another sparring session and I felt so comfortable and relaxed in there.”

Meantime, Holy Trinity coach Pete Brady was named senior coach of the year at the Belfast Sports Awards in City Hall on Saturday night.
