NATIONAL SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS OPENING SESSIONS

Jude Gallagher has put in the hard hours for the National Senior Championships.

The Two Castles BC flyweight meets Monkstown BC (Dublin) stand out Sean Kavanagh for a place in the last four of the tournament tomorrow.

Boxing begins at 12pm and will feature an all Cork three-rounder between Callum Walsh and Ryan McCarthy at light-welter.

Twenty eight bouts will be decided on Day 1.

Gallagher reckons there has been a noticeable improvement in his performances over the last number of weeks.

“This is my first time competing at senior level and my preparation has been first class, he said.

“I’ve had a great win against a European silver medalist from Russia (Alexey Shendrik) two weeks ago at the Smithfield Box Cup and had a fight in Hull last weekend against a top English lad at a weight above me.

“The improvement from one week to the next was massive. I’ve also had top class (outing) against the Youth Asian champion from India this week in Edenderry.”

Bradon McCarthy is also in action Saturday. The St Michael’s Athy man meets Star BC prospect John Paul Hale in the first of the lightweight quarter-finals.

Dublin’s Careron Bennett and Cork’s Aaron O’Donoghue get proceedings underway in the opening bout of the Championships.

Two female quarter-finals will be resolved, with Jennifer Lehan and Tiffany O’Reilly going head-to-head with Catherine Blaney and Kellie McLoughlin at featherweight.

Saturday’s weigh-ins – 8am to 9am and 12pm to 1pm at the National Stadium.

All subsequent weigh-ins are from 8am to 9am and 12pm to 1pm at the National Stadium on the day of each session.
