O’Rourke & Marley through to Strandja semi finals.

Paris qualified boxers Aoife O’Rourke and Jack Marley have guaranteed themselves at least a bronze at the 75th Strandja Memorial Tournament, following quarter finals victories today.

75kg Aoife O’Rourke contested against Poland’s Elzbieta Wojcik. Aoife has won every contest against the Polish boxer, and today was no different. Aoife’s 5-0 victory was decisive, and the scorecards finished: 26:29; 26:29; 25:30; 27:29; 27:29

Heavyweight, Jack Marley, had the longest wait of any Irish boxer before beginning his campaign. He made his tournament debut today against Uzbekistan’s Madiyar Saydrakhimov. This was a close contest, which Jack won by 3-2 split decision. Judges scored the bout 29:28; 28:29; 28:29; 28:29; 30:27

Also in action today were 54kg Niamh Fay, following her keynote win over India’s Preeti Preeti. Niamh left it all in the ring, but the unanimous decision went to her opponent, Serbia’s Sara Cirkovic: 30:26; 30:27; 29:28; 30:27; 30:27. 66kg Lisa O’Rourke, like her sister, contested against Polish opposition in the form of Aneta Rygielska. This was a tight contest, and resulted ina 4-1 split in Rygielska’s favour – the final scores: 29:28; 30:27; 29:28; 28:29; 30: 27.

Quarter Finals, Day Two

One Team Ireland boxers, 71kg Eugene McKeever, is in action on Friday, following his 5-0 victory over Moldova’s Davron Bozorov on Wednesday. Eugene takes on India’s Akash Akash in the opening bout of Ring B’s evening session.


261 boxers from 28 federations will contest the tournament, hosted in Sofia by the Bulgarian Boxing Federation. Algeria, Armenia, Austria, Bulgaria, China, France, Georgia, Greece, Guatemala, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, Kyrgyzstan, Lithuania, Moldova, Mongolia, Morocco, Nigeria, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Tajikistan, Thailand, Tukey, Turkey and Uzbekistan have all fielded teams.


The Bulgarian Boxing Federation is streaming the tournament on its YouTube Channel – links, per ring and session, become available on the day of boxing. The afternoon session begins at 12pm, Irish time, and the evening session at 2.30pm, Irish time.
