PORTLAOISE BC SELECT IN POLAND

A Portlaoise BC Irish select are are abroad this weekend for the Leszka Drogosz Memorial in south central Poland.

 

The seven-strong team meet opponents from Poland and Ukraine tomorrow evening in Kielce.

 

Michael Nevin, who claimed World Youth bronze in Russia last month, lines out for the visitors along with 2015 Elite super-heavy finalist Thomas Carthy.

 

The Portlaoise BC select are also taking part in a training camp in Poland and return home Monday.

 

Kielce-born Drogosz was an eight-time Polish champion, a three-time European Elite champion and claimed Olympic bronze at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome.

 

The Polish legend was a team-mate of Zbigniew Pietrzykowski who lost the 1960 Olympic light-heavy final to a young American called Cassius Clay in the Eternal City.
