Tough day at the office for Team Ireland

A challenging day at the office for Team Ireland at the 2024 European Elite Championships in Belgrade.

Two Ireland boxers were in action in the men’s Quarter Finals. 57kg Adam Hession boxed a podium place against Russia’s Eduard Savvin. This was a highly physical bout, and Adam acquitted himself well after two excellent preliminaries wins. The 5-0 decision went to the Russian athlete, and the judges scored the bout 27:30; 27:30; 28:29; 27:30; 27:30.

4 bouts later (Bout 11) in the same ring and session, Paris qualified 63.5kg boxer, Dean Clancy, boxed for bronze against Azerbaijan’s Malik Hasanov. This was also a 5-0 decision, scored 29:28; 30:27; 30:27; 30:27; 30:27.

401 boxers from 38 federations will contest the championships. Prize money will be awarded in all weight categories, from quarter finalists to champions. Those finishing at the QF stage will receive $1,000; bronze medalists will be awarded $5,000 apiece. Winning silver means a $10,000 award, and champions will get $15,000.

All semi-finals take place on Thursday. Friday is a rest day at the tournament, and finals will be boxed across Saturday and Sunday.

Semi Finals

Four boxers contest semi-finals on Thursday, vying to up-grade their bronze medals to silver.

50kg Shannon Sweeney is in Bout 2 of Ring A’s Afternoon Session, against Armenia’s Anush Grigoryan -Reigning Olympic champion and Paris Olympian, Kellie Harrington, contests her semi in bout 6 of the same ring and session, against Serbia’s Natalia Shadrina. Double Olympian, 75kg Aoife O’Rourke, is in action in Bout 10, against Turkey’s Isildar Busra. 54kg Niamh Fay is in Ring B’s Afternoon Session, boxing Romania’s Lacramioara Perijoc for a place in the finals in Bout 4.

Afternoon Sessions at the tournament begin at 2pm, Irish time – Evening Sessions begin at 4.45pm.
