
Team Ireland made it 3 wins from 3 on the opening day of the World Junior Championships in Yerevan, Armenia.
In all, 345 boxers from 51 countries are contesting the tournament, the first of its kind in 8 years. 11 of those boxers are Team Ireland athletes – one of whom, 63Kg Siofra Lawless of Four Kings BC, has at least a bronze medal by virtue of the draw.
52Kg Christian Doyle opened Team Ireland’s World Juniors campaign, contesting against Surendrasingh Sahil Broad of India in Ring B’s Bout 5. Christian was dominant throughout, and came away with the 5-0 decision. Judges scored the bout 29:27, 29:27; 29:27, 30:26, 29:27.
57Kg Patrick Kelly opened his tournament in Ring A’s Bout 8, against Mexico’s Edgar Cornejo Pinacho. He recorded Ireland’s second UD of the day, on a score-line of 27: 30, 27:30, 27:30, 28:29, 27: 30. In the same Ring, 6 bouts later, 63Kg John Donoghue contested against Amirmohamma Rostampour of Iran – and won the third 5-0 decision of the day – 30:27, 30:27, 30: 27, 30: 27, 30:27.
There are no Team Ireland boxers contesting on the second day of the tournament.
