AIBA WORLD ELITE SEMI-FINALS

Kellie Harrington (red)

Kellie Harrington and Kazakhstan’s Karina Ibragimova meet for a place in the lightweight final at the World Elite Women’s Championships in New Delhi, India tomorrow.

Both women will be in the ring at approximately 11.50am (Irish time) Thursday morning.

Thailand’s Sudapom Seesondee, who shocked Finland’s No. 1 seed Mira Potkonen in the last eight, and Korea’s Yeonji Oh meet in the corresponding semi-final heading into a weekend in which there’ll be a new name on the 60kg title.

Dublin native Harrington, a silver medallist at light welter at the 2016 World Elites in Kazakhstan, has won three bouts so far in New Delhi.

Except for the first two World Women’s Championships in 2001 and 2002 when it was won by Canada, the lightweight belt has remained in Europe since 2005, with Russia and France securing the 60kg crown twice and Ireland, courtesy of Katie Taylor, claiming it five times.

France’s Estelle Mossely is not defending the lightweight title she won in 2016 in New Delhi as she’s turned professional.

All of the world’s female  Olympic champions – England’s Nicola Adams (2), America’s Claressa Shields (2), Taylor and Mossley –  from the first two Olympiads featuring women’s boxing at London 2012 and Rio 2016 have now switched codes.

Meantime, the first batch of semi-finals will be decided tomorrow in New Delhi with the second session of last four matches scheduled for Friday.

21 nations, including Ireland, are guaranteed at least bronze in India.

The finals are scheduled for Saturday with a 10.30am (Irish time) start.
