Ireland’s boxers for the Rio 2016 Games have been confirmed.

Please click here for confirmed boxers for Rio 2016.

The first sixty 60 boxers for Rio were confirmed by the International Boxing Association yesterday.

Paddy Barnes, Michael Conlan, Steven Donnelly and Joe Ward will represent Ireland in the light-fly, bantam, welter and light heavy weights in Rio.

Barnes and Donnelly qualified through the World Series of Boxing and Conlan and Ward through regular amateur boxing, although Conlan also qualified through the WSB.

Irish boxing has nine – three for women and six for men – further Olympic places to aim for in 2016.

Overall,  a further 190 men and 36 women will be confirmed in 2016.

Olympic champion Katie Taylor and Irish women’s boxing will be aiming to qualify in Istanbul, Turkey next April and at the World Championships in Kazakhstan in May.

The Irish male team for the 2016 qualifiers will take shape after the National Elite finals at the National Stadium in Dublin tomorrow night. Ten finals will be decided.

Combined with the European Elite gold he also claimed in 2015, the top of the podium finish on the Arabian Peninsula lifted the London 2012 bronze medallist to No. 1 in the World in the AIBA Elite bantamweight rankings.

Conlan, with his dad John working his corner in the World Series of Boxing (WSB), also qualified for the Rio 2016 Olympics through the WSB and AOB this year. The World Elite champion, as per rule, must take the Olympic place he earned through AOB in Doha.

Tickets are on sale for Friday’s Elite finals at the National Stadium in Dublin. Ten finals will be decided on the night.

Martin Stokes is looking forward to meeting the man who inspired him  – and trying to stop him celebrating a high-five.

The Holy Family BC welter meets London 2012 Olympian Adam Nolan over three, three minute rounds in Friday’s National Elite 69kg final.

The Drogheda-native decisioned Caoimhin Hynes last Saturday to set up the clash with the Bray BC southpaw.

Nolan will be aiming for his fifth title at the home of Irish boxing.

“I know Caoimhin. He’s a very experienced boxer as well, he’s very good. But I went in there confident, as any boxer should, and I did what I have to do,“ said Stokes, who can’t wait for the weekend’s final.

“It’ll be the biggest fight on my record. I looked up to Adam Nolan for years so it will be good to hop in with someone who inspired you.”

MICK O’BRIEN has been elected President of the Cork County Boxing Board (CCBB).

The new President, who worked as the PRO with the CCBB for the last four years, was elected for a two-year term last night at a specially convened meeting.

“I’m looking forward to the challenges ahead and I expect to my put own mark on Cork County boxing,” said Mick O’Brien, who hailed the contribution of outgoing President Ted Barry over the last seven years as outstanding.

The sport has grown exponentially on Leeside this decade and now has the highest concentration of clubs in Ireland after Antrim and Dublin.

THE CCBB recently officially opened the doors of its new headquarters in Churchfield, which will serve as an interim base until the eagerly anticipated state-of-the-art Centre of Excellence and High Performance Unit is build in Knocknaheeny.

Pat Ryan, President of the Irish Amateur Boxing Association, congratulated Mick O’Brien on his election.

HEAD TO HEAD – MCCOMB V JOYCE – THE REMATCH

Sean McComb (red) v David Oliver Joyce - 2014 Elite 60kg final

Sean McComb (red) v David Oliver Joyce – 2014 Elite 60kg final

60kg (Lightweight) Final – Sean McComb v David Oliver Joyce

Defending champion Sean McComb and David Oliver Joyce have collected seven Irish Elite belts between them over the last nine years ahead of Friday’s head-to-head for All-Ireland supremacy in the 60kg class, which is one of the nine weights Irish boxing will be targeting for an Olympic berth in 2016.

The Holy Trinity BC and St Michael’s Athy BC lightweights have crossed swords once.

That was in the 2014 Elite final, a fight which Joyce won on a split decision. The St Michael’s Athy man inked a contract with AIBA Pro Boxing (APB) in October 2014 and was ineligible for the 2015 Championships. APB boxers are not allowed enter National Championships unless the tournament is part of an Olympic qualification process.

A year prior to the head-to-head between the Ulster and Leinster pair, which was scored on the 10-point must system, McComb won his first belt after beating George Bates 19-7 under the computer scoring system. He reclaimed the belt last January on a split decision over Bates.

McComb secured bronze at the inaugural European Games last June, the rangy Belfast southpaw asking quite a few questions of former AIBA World Elite champion Albert Selimov in the last-four in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Likewise, Joyce, who has won his five Elite belts at three different weights, is no stranger to putting ex AIBA World Elite champions under severe pressure, the Irish orthodox beating 2009 World gold medallist Domenico Valentino twice, once in AIBA Open Boxing before following that up with victory over the Italian in the World Series of Boxing.

Joyce will be targeting a double hat-trick on Friday over three, three minute rounds, McComb aiming for a hat-trick. Both men have represented their country at two World Elite Championships each. Joyce is the only Irish boxer beside Rio 2016 Olympian Joe Ward to win gold at the Chemistry Cup.
