WALLACE CONFIDENT GOING INTO 75KG DECIDER WITH WORLD NO. 3

The St Monica’s BC in Newry don’t hang about, do they?

It’s just a few months since they were founded this year and already they have a boxer through to an Elite final.

Conor Wallace goes head-to-head with AIBA World No. 3 ranked Michael O’Reilly on Friday for the Elite middleweight title of Ireland at the National Stadium.

Wallace has already claimed an Intermediate belt this year after beating Eddie Byrne in the 75kg final in October. He also beat Byrne of the Na Fianna BC in the Elite semi-finals last weekend.

The Intermediate champion faces a formidable opponent in O’Reilly. The Portlaoise BC man is aiming for his third successive belt in the 75kg class.

O’Reilly claimed European Games gold in Baku, Azerbaijan last June and also took home bronze from the AIBA World Elite Championships in Doha, Qatar.

Wallace, who is competing at his first Elite Championships, acknowledged that he is the underdog going into Friday’s showdown, but the St Monica’s BC stand out believes the pressure will be on his opponent and reckons he can cause an upset.

He said: “I am really looking forward to Friday’s final, it’s a massive occasion. I know that I’m going into the final as a big underdog, but I’m coming off the back of a few great wins, beating Conor Coyle (Commonwealth Games bronze medallist) and Eddie Byrne on route to the final.

“There is no pressure on me. The pressure is on him. Michael isn’t world number three for nothing. He is a top class opponent and I have a lot of respect for him.

“But I’m confident and I’m boxing well, I feel fit and strong and I know if I box to the best of my ability I can cause an upset.”

Brian Wallace, father of Conor, said it was a massive boost for the club to have an athlete through to an Elite decider.

“It’s absolutely great even for the younger members who have just started. It encourages them and shows them what they can achieve,” said Wallace senior, who was Irish team manager at the recent European Youth Championships in Poland.

O’Reilly, meantime, has his eye on an Elite hat-trick at the home of Irish boxing.

“I’d be confident going into the final. It’s what I’ve been preparing for. I have to do what I do best. I’m focussing on that,” said the European No. 1.

NATIONAL ELITE FINALS

Brendan Irvine (red) v Willie Donoghue

Brendan Irvine (red) v Willie Donoghue

European Games silver medallist Brendan Irvine is enjoying the move up to flyweight and is one victory away from winning two Elite titles at different weights in the same year.

The AIBA World No. 7 meets TJ Waite in an all Antrim clash on Friday night in the flyweight final less than a year after winning his first belt in Ireland’s top flight at light-fly.

Irvine beat ex World Junior champion Willie Donoghue at the weekend, and Waite, on an emotional evening following a bereavement in his family, decisioned Jason McKay.

The 52kg title is vacant as Myles Casey, who claimed the belt last January, has moved up to bantam. The Limerick man faces defending champion Kurt Walker for the 56kg crown.

“I’m happy to get the first win,“ said St Paul’s BC stand out Irvine after Friday’s decision over Donoghue, who was making his Elite debut.

“I just listened to what my coaches said. The game plan was to draw him in and box him and just get on with it. I feel a bit better, I’ve been working hard with my strength and conditioning coach.”

“I look a bit different and feel a bit different as well. I’m still tall enough at the weight too.”

With Irish boxing heading into key Olympic qualifiers in 2016, Irvine has one eye on the 31st Olympiad.

“I hope it benefits me and puts me on the road to Rio,” he added. Ten Elite finals will be decided on Friday at the National Stadium in Dublin.

ELITE SEMI-FINAL RESULTS – 2ND SESSION

Ray Moylette (red) and

Ray Moylette (red) and Wayne Kelly tonight

Ex European Elite champion Ray Moylette and current European Games bronze medallist and defending lightweight champion Sean McComb booked their tickets into the 64kg and 60kg National Elite finals at the National Stadium tonight.

But the Mayo and Belfast pair were taken all the way down to the wire by George Bates and Wayne Kelly before having their hands raised on split decisions.

World No. 3 ranked middleweight Michael O’Reilly also advanced, the European Games champion beating John Joyce in an engaging 75kg clash.

Brendan Irvine, who claimed a light-fly belt at January’s Elites but who has moved up to fly, progressed to within one victory of nailing two Elite titles at two different weights inside twelve months following his win over ex World Junior champion Willie Donoghue.

Brendan Irvine (red) and Willie Donoghue tonight

Myles Casey, who has moved to bantam, kept the flag flying for Limerick with a unanimous verdict over Jason Kirwan. Like Irvine, the St Francis BC ace, who secure a flyweight belt in January, will be targeting two Elite crowns on the trot at two different weights next weekend.

Current WBO World champion and ex St Francis BC stand out Andy Lee didn’t even manage that!

Meantime, Martin Stokes, Conor Wallace, John Paul Delaney, Bernard O’Reilly, a brother and Portlaoise BC team mate of Michaal in action earlier, and Thomas Carty also hand their raised in triumph.

Willie Donoghue and John Joyce were making their Elite debuts at the Stadium. The St Michael’s Athy BC duo gave fine accounts of themselves this evening against opponents – Irvine and Michael O’Reilly – who are ranked in the top eight in the world in their respective weight classes.

Nine of the weekend’s bouts were won and lost on split decisions. The finals will be decided next Friday.
