Team Ireland Youths began a training camp with Russia in Dungarvan Sports Centre in Waterford on Saturday.

Both nations will train, spar and have test matches before a second Irish squad begin training with the visitors next Thursday, according to head coach Billy McClean.

“We’ve split the Irish team into two squads and will be using a total of eighteen boxers. The squads will get their first taste of Dungarvan against the best boxing nation in the world. The Russian team have brought a qualify squad of World and European Youth and Junior champions and medalists to Waterford,” he said.

Jason Harty, who picked up an award at last Friday’s Irish Athletic Boxing Association Annual Awards Night, is included in the squad, along with European Schoolboy champions Aaron McKenna and Oliver McCarthy.

Both nations will have two test matches on Thursday.

The first competitive international outing of the year for Irish boxing begins later this month in Bulgaria.

The Strandja multi-nations for men and women begins on February 23rd in Sofia.

Ken Egan, Eric Donovan, Conor Ahern, Martin Rogan, Andrew Murray and Henry Coyle were included in the first Irish squad to compete in the tournament in 2004. None of the 2004 team finished amongst the medals.

The Strandja multi-nations has been running since 1950.

The Irish squad for the 67th edition of the tournament will be confirmed shortly. Click here for invitation letter.

The Irish Athletic Boxing Association Annual Awards saw the top stars of 2015 celebrated at the Louis Fitzgerald Hotel in Dublin tonight.

IABA Vice President Joe Hernon and IABA Registrar Stephen Connolly presented the awards. IABA Secretary Sean Crowley introduced the evening.

GLEN BC CELEBRATES CENTENARY

THE famed Glen boxing club in Cork is about to commence a year of Centenary celebrations.

One hundred years ago, in February 1916, the club were formed in Blackpool of Leeside.

Amongst the founders were the famous Packie O’Mahony and his brothers John and Michaeleen, along with Willie Ryan, Pat O’Shea and Con O’Donovan.

The events organised by the Glen BC for their Centenary year include a Mass for deceased members at 6pm in Blackpool Church on Saturday, January 30 and a club tournament on Sunday, January 31..

There will be a reunion of members on February 19 and on Thursday March 24 an official visit to the Lord Mayor of Cork at City Hall.

The club gala Centenary dinner takes place on 15 April 15, followed by a Centenary international boxing tournament a few weeks later.

The club will also produce a souvenir publication.Other events will be announced later in the year.

Mick O’Brien, President of the Cork County Boxing Board, hailing the longevity and servitude of the the Glen BC, lauded the club’s contribution to Irish and Cork boxing over the last ten decades.
