17 Ulster Elite Champions were crowned in the heart of Belfast this evening, with holding of the championship finals in the Girdwood Community Hub.
Ulster President, Kevin Duffy, opening the evening by paying tribute to all those lost to the boxing community over the last year. In particular, the man known as the voice of Irish Boxing, Peter O’Donnell. Peter had announced decades of Ulster championships across all ages, and passed away on October 19th. Keving says Peter’s was “the voice we’ll never forget”. A ten bell saulte was held in Peter’s honour.
Among those in attendance at the Girdwood Community Hub Belfast this evening were IABA CEO Gary Stewart, High Performance Director Jon Mackey, Interim High Performance Head Coach Damian Kennedy, President of Antrim Paddy Barnes Snr and Conal Heatley CEO Commonwealth Games Committee.
A special presentation, honouring the serivce and committment of ringside doctor, Dr. Michael McKenna, was made this evening. He was assisted throughout the championships in safeguarding boxer welfare by paramedic, Colm McCrory
The Memorial Belt for best boxer of the tournament was presented to Jude Gallagher of Two Castles Olympic BC while the award for best young boxer went to Fionn Duffy, St. Joseph’s
