Grainne Walsh recorded Ireland’s first win of the 2016 European Elite Championships in spectacular style in Sofia, Bulgaria today.

The Irish welter stopped Serbia’s Marija Petovic in the third round this afternoon in the Bulgarian capital. The Belgrade southpaw took three standing counts in rounds one and three – one after she was dropped by a sweeping right hook – as Walsh piled on the pressure from the opening bell.

The Sparticus BC orthodox will now meet Russia’s Saadat Abdulaeva in the quarter-finals on Sunday with at least a bronze medal up for grabs.

Earlier today, Lauren Hogan lost to Russia’s Ekaterina Pinigiana.

The two-time Russian Elite champion earned a unanimous decision over the Irish light-fly from an up-tempo last-16 four-rounder.

Pinigiana’s greater industry on the day took the verdict, but Hogan founded the target with some big shots throughout the contest, particularly in rounds two and four, a frame she won. Big performance from Hogan against a top class opponent.

Shauna O’Keeffe will be in action tomorrow versus Poland in the lightweight class.
