David Oliver Joyce (blue) v Gary Cully last weekend
David Oliver Joyce has received a walkover into the lightweight final of the National Elite Championships at Dublin’s National Stadium.
The three-time European Union Elite champion was due to meet his brother and St Michael’s Athy BC team-mate Hughie in the 60kg semi-final tonight.
But St Michael’s Athy coach and former IABA President President Domenic O’Rourke confirmed today that Hughie Joyce did not weigh-in after picking up a chest infection.
Joyce will now meet defending champion Sean McComb or George Bates in the lightweight final.
Bates and European Games bronze medallist McComb go head-to-head tomorrow night.
Boxing begins tonight at 7.30pm. The remaining semi-finals will be decided tomorrow evening.
AIBA World No. 3 ranked middleweight Michael O’Reilly opens his title defence on Saturday against either Fearghus Quinn or John Joyce, who clash in the one outstanding quarter-final this evening.
Today’s weigh-ins have now been completed. Saturday’s weigh-ins – 8am to 9am and 12pm to 1pm.
