The Kildare bantamweight lost on a unanimous decision to India’s Kumar Akash.
McCarthy drove home big shots in all three rounds, two sweeping hooks in the opening exchanges, solid rights at the end of the second and a fine uppercut in the third were the pick of his punches.
But the judges opted for the relentless aggression, punch volume and work ethic of Akash. Finals scores – 30-27,30-27,29-28,29-28,29-28.
Daine Moorehouse is in action at approximately 5pm this afternoon (Irish time) versus Marta Lopez Del Arbol of Spain.
Moorehouse beat the Andalucia light-fly on a unanimous decision en route to gold at the European Youths earlier this year.
