Dylan Duffy and Keith Flavin bowed out of the European U/22 Championships at the quarter-final stage in Braila, Romania today.
The results bring Ireland’s competitive interest in the tournament to a close.
Duffy, in against Yaroslav Khartsyz, countered well, particularly in the latter stages of the second round, against the constant aggression of the Ukrainian, whose work, whilst being untidy, impressed the judges enough to earn a place in the last-four.
Duffy also had a good third, while Khartsyz won the first, but the Ukrainian got the nod on a 3-2 split. Flavin was unlucky to be on the wrong end of a unanimous decision to Paulo Di Lerna.
The Italian light-welter, lively and constantly moving forward, had his moments. Di Lerna’s cumulative work basically took the day, but Duffy, when he established the distance, found the target with the majority of the cleaner punches throughout.
Ireland won five bouts in Romania. The squad are scheduled to arrive home at 10pm on Wednesday evening via Dublin Airport.
