Ireland will be taking home two gold and two silver, at least, from the European Junior Championships in Anapa, Russia.
Tipperary’s Ellie Mai-Gartland and Kildare’s Lauren Dempsey struck double gold this morning against Romania and Russia, but Sinainn Glynn and Lisa O’Rourke had to settle for silver.
Mai-Garland was on top from opening to closing bell against Romania’s Maria Gheorghe in a powerful statement of intent and will to win, while Dempsey, giving away a lot of height to Azalia Amineva, subjected the Russian feather to a torrid three rounds en route to a split decision victory.
Glynn and Iiona Sarembo battled each other all the way down to the wire but it was the German lightweight that got the nod after three close rounds.
O’Rourke found the target with the vast majority of cleaner shots – accurate punch stats an estimated 3-1 to Ireland – against Zofiya Stackhovyak but it was the aggressive Pole who earned a 3-2 split decision against her more skillful opponent.
Patrick Myers, the last Irish boxer in today’s finals, should be in the ring shortly after 4pm (Irish time) today versus Azerbaijan.
As thing stand, Ireland’s medal haul is 2 gold, 2 silver, 1 guaranteed silver, and 8 bronze.
