Sunday was an historic day, as County Antrim Boxing IABA, through the Belfast City Council Boxing strategy and its Female Development Squad initiative hosted the first ever all female event in the province.
18 top quality exhibitions with all female boxers, coaches, officials medical staff & presenters.
This is hopefully the first in a long line of all female events from this development squad.
Double Olympian and 3 times commonwealth games medalist and current history-maker in her own right 12 time Irish Elite champion Michaela Walsh bestowed all medals.
Cllr Ruth Brooks Chair of the People & Communities committee and Disability Working Group Belfast City Council was on hand to make presentations. She presented Kelly Sloan City of Belfast Boxing Academy with her IABA Fundemantals of Boxing coaching certificate. Kelly being the first wheel chair user in the city to complete her fundamentals.
Other recipients of their fundamentals coaching were Under 22 European Silver Medalist Carleigh Irving (Oakleaf BC) & Irish elite finalist Zoe Mc Caughran (Evolution)
County Antrim President Patrick Barnes Senior awarded two services to County Antrim boxing & women in sport awards to Kate Meli (Immaculata BC) and Anne Murphy (Banbridge BC).
A huge thanks goes to the County Antrim Female Development committee and our Workforce Development Officer for organising today’s historic event and we wish them well in their future events. Squad training for this group as ever takes place in midland boxing club and will return in the new year.
