IABA mourns the passing of Coach, Jim Moore.

Jim was a decades long presence in Arklow Boxing Club, Wicklow County Board and was a pivotal figure as High Performance Youth and Juniors Head Coach, and was a driving force behind podium finishes at World youth and junior championships as well as European youths and junior championships up to 2010 – including at the inaugural Youth Olympics at which Ryan Burnett won gold.

In 2001, he was awarded the presitigous ESB Coach of the Year Award, having been nominated by IABA and Wicklow County Board after the world championships in Belfast in the same year.

 A boxer from Cadet age himself with multiple titles, Jim also contributed significantly to the development of coaching throughout the IABA, as a Coach Tutor, delivering learning to club members taking the first steps in their coaching careers.

Arklow Boxing Club says ” End of an era for Arklow Boxing Club. Jim Moore founder member, Head coach,Co Board chairman and club chairman passed away today.Jim was well known and respected by the boxing fraternity, at local, provincial, national and international level. Jim founded the club with Mick Morgan 50years ago. Jim, for 7 years, worked on the newly formed high performance unit along with Billy Walsh, Zaur anthia and Gary keegan. He visited European countries taking all the best bits and developed a system the envy of other nations. Jackie Manley, pat mythen and Martin Wolohan kept the club going for that 7 years. Jim returned to the club and continued where he left off. Jim travelled all over Europe with Irish teams and was the proudest man in Ireland when his son James won a bronze medal in the world championships in Belfast.James turned Pro and had over 20 fights winning most of them. He now resides in NY. Jim’s daughter is highly involved in the club as secretary and coach and with the other coaches are doing great work to keep things going. Jim passed away in St vincents with his family by his side in the early hours of this morning. Jim’s funeral is sure to be a big one with so many he coached boxing to down the years. Deepest condolences to Mary Owen James and Linda and the extended family.”

IABA President, Anto Donnelly says “Jim was an excellent coach, and a good man held in high regard throughout the Assoication – his contribution to boxing at club, national and international level was significant and speaks for itself. As important, but perhaps not as visibile, was his contribution to the next generation of coaches, ensuring high technical standards and boxer-centred coaching. IABA extends our deepest condolences to his family, his club and his many friends. May he rest in peace.”

Olympian and World medalist at Junior, Youth and Senior level Joe Ward says “Recieved very sad news this morning Jim Moore sadly passed away, Jim was a lovely person and was a great boxing man did so much for Irish boxing and his boxing club I had some great memories with jim one of the all time greatest boxing coaches RIP Jim 🙏

Jim is survived by wife Mary, children Owen, James, Linda & the late Paul & sister Junie, Charlotte & the late Elizabeth & Marie, his son-in-law Mick, daughters-in-law Gillian & Leanne, grandchildren Liam, Owen, Paul, Amy, Ryan, Dylan, James & Finn, sisters, brother-in-law Jackie, nephews, nieces, relatives & his many friends from Arklow Boxing Club & beyond.

Funeral Arrangements

Reposing at Sweeney’s Funeral Home from 4pm until 8pm on Wednesday.

House private on Thursday when Jim will spend his last day in the home he loved. Removal from his residence on Friday morning at 9.15 to St. Mary & Peter’s Church arriving for Requiem Mass at 10 o’clock.

Those who cannot attend are welcome to join via webcam;

Funeral afterwards to St. Gabriel’s Cemetery, walking via the Wexford Road.
